Brilliant and obsessive scientist Andre Delambre (David Hedison) has been killed in his own factory, his arm and head deliberately crushed by an industrial hydraulic press. Andre's wife Helene (Patricia Owens) is far from hysterical though and calmly tells the baffled police that she helped kill her husband by operating the press herself. She won't however reveal the reason why. "I cannot answer that question; coffee, Inspector?" replies Helene, playing a rather obtuse straight bat considering the circumstances. I think I may just have seen the funniest film ever made!! Is it a comedy? I hear you all ask....well no! Its supposedly a "horror" film. How it got called that I will never know! (Put it this way, a 4 year old could watch it just before going to bed, i'm sure of it!) ~ Whats the plot? ~ Right well basically the whole film revolves around a scientist and his wife (oh and thier boy). The scientist has his own lab in his basement. He is supposed to be doing experiments on electricity (the film was made in 1958!). However he then decides to dabble in the realm's of quantum physics. I remember watching the original version of The Fly one Sunday evening. Although not scary it did have brilliant tension and it’s scares. David Cronenberg, as you can guess, has gone for more gore than suspense. But wait, it’s not only a gory, horror film. What this is, is a excellent script and story, with good acting and effects to give us what is an outstandingly intellectual horror film. This is a horror movie with depth. Although it does have some of the most disgusting moments in movie history, (jaws falling off, legs being melted), it’s much more about characters and the evolution of Jeff Goldblum into a fly as ...
