THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE 2006 RE-MAKE RATHER THAN THE ORIGINAL!
Having enjoyed the original so much I couldn't wait to see the remake but was left very disappointed. Having seen comments made on it such as "scarier than the original", "a must for fans of the first" and "a remake worthy of the original" I had great expectations for it but it was actually in my opinion very poor.
The story is one of a ship full of lepers of the rocky shores of an isolated Californian town is badly wrecked during an eerie bank of mysterious fog. It turns out that the people of the town have purposefully misguided the ship deliberately dooming everyone on board to rid the town of them. Now one hundred years later the ghosts of those on board the ship have returned to exact revenge on the relatives of the town's people who caused their deaths.
Hidden within a bank of supernatural fog the ghosts trap the people of this remote community intent on killing the direct descendents of the men and women who ordered their ship be sunk and anyone else who gets in their way.
Although the story follows the original quite closely there are new ideas added and this somewhat drags the film on a bit. As with most remakes there is an attempt made to make it more frightening than the original but for me this turned the film a bit towards the farcical. The original was directed by John Carpenter who himself claimed that this version was scarier but I think having watched it he may just have been slipped a few bucks to come out with the statement.
The remake was directed by Rupert Wainwright and starred Tom Welling and Maggie Grace who with some very decent acting kept the movie watchable.
The cast:
Tom Welling ... Nick Castle
Maggie Grace ... Elizabeth Williams
Selma Blair ... Stevie Wayne
DeRay Davis ... Spooner
Kenneth Welsh ... Tom Malone
Adrian Hough ... Father Robert Malone
Sara Botsford ... Kathy Williams
Cole Heppell ... Andy Wayne
Mary Black ... Aunt Connie
Jonathon Young ... Dan The Weatherman
R. Nelson Brown ... Machen
Christian Bocher ... Founding Father Malone
Douglas Arthurs ... Founding Father Williams (as Douglas H. Arthurs)
Yves Cameron ... Founding Father Wayne
Charles Andre ... Founding Father Castle (as Charles André)
The DVD:
Runtime: 1 hour 40 minutes
Classification: 15
Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround
Video: 16.9 widescreen
As you will already have gathered it is not a movie I would be in a hurry to recommend to people. If you have seen the first then this will definitely disappoint and if you have not seen the original then choose to watch it instead would be my advice.
I paid £7.99 for this DVD and I believe that to be still around the going rate for it, the original can be purchased from a few places online for as little as 5 pounds so save your money and enjoy the better of the two.
Thanks for reading!
Summary: They dont make em like they used to!
