Advantages: Good Storyline, Social Commentary

Disadvantages: Gets tainted by Halloween

John Carpenter tried to follow up 'Halloween' with a story of ships, revenge and the history all combining to creat havoc in a New England village.
The Fog is a superb film to watch on a windy winter evening. The whole film has a cold dark feel to it, even in the daytime scenes.
The story is put forward at the start by an old sea-dog recounting a tall tale to some schoolchildren huddled round a cmapfire. He says that when the fog ever appears coming from the sea then the dead crew of a ship wrecked on the rocks will come back to hunt the living...that night strange things begin to happen in the sleepy fishing village.
To compare this to Halloween would be grossly unfair. Carpenter has arguably not made a better film. The Fog should probably rate as his 2nd best an also ran which any other director would be proud of. It combines different storylines and winds them into one basic tale of human greed and revenge.
When the fog rolls in....The terror begins!

The book 'The Fog' has no connection to the Carpenter film I think. Indeed the film and the book share the premise that killers appear when the fog turns up but the effect that the fog has on people is totally different.
The Herbert novel doe's have a more 'sexual' side to it I think.
That is really where any link ends.

I'm usually the first to hide behind the sofa when a horror film comes on, but to be honest this one just made me laugh. Must have pressed the wrong buttons or something : )

In 1975 James Herbert wrote a book called 'The Fog'. It involved a fog that came in from the sea and turned people mad - they then went round killing everyone.
It seems that in this film the bad buys turned up with the fog - they then went round killing everyone.

Can anyone tell me if there is a link between the two?
