The Freshman (DVD) ... DVD released 20 May, 2002 at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Andrew Bergman’s tongue-in-cheek comedy The Freshman keeps the spoofing low key, underplaying the outrageous situations even as he piles them higher. Young Clark Kellog (Matthew Broderick) had no idea film school would drop him into the hands of a real-life Godfather, but after a street punk robs him during his first day in New York City, that’s just where the road leads. Marlon Brando lets everyone know he’s in on the joke with his hammy, good-humoured performance as the bulldog-jowled Mafioso Carmine Sabatini, the man Clark’s prissy, self-important professor swears was the real-life inspiration for Don Corleone. Carmine has a modest proposal for the naive kid from Vermont involving Carmine’s gorgeous daughter Tina (Penelope Ann Miller) and the illegal importing of an endangered lizard. And if the sight of a six-foot-long lizard scattering shoppers as it runs wild through a New York City mall doesn’t do it for you, there’s always Bert Parks’ rousing rendition of Bob Dylan’s "Maggie’s Farm".--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

At one point Broderick is so involved that he thinks that he's going to have to marry the boss' daughter, but it turns out it's all a ruse to get the governement off his back, as he's been pretending to serve up endangered species to customers at special balls. Well worth seeing, as Broderick is his normal brillaint self, an Brando just steals the show from him as the Godfatheresque mob boss. ...more

Premium Review The Freshman (DVD): The return of Vito Corleone (102 words)
by - written on 15/06/00 (17 readings)
Rating:

The Freshman sees the character of Vito Corleone from the first Godfather film resurected and employing film student Mathew Broderick to transport endangered species around the country. The film is very fast moving as we see Broderick getting into a big predicament very fast. Acting is great from the stressed out Broderick to Brando hamming up his Godfather role. The storyline is very original and the characters very eccentric and appealing, in paticular Brodericks film school professor, the aformentioned Brando as a hammed up Corleone, Brodericks off the wall father and Broderick himself as a misplaced and miscircumstanced film student. ...  Read the complete review
