This was Fincher's next film after the brilliant Seven and whilst it is more of a conventional thriller than that film is still great. It looks very much like a Fincher film, with good use of shadows in Nicolas' sprawling mansion and well shot scenes set at night. He keeps tight control of what could be a convoluted...more

by - written on 29/10/09 (Very useful, 11 readings)
Rating:

The Game is a 1997 film directed by David Fincher and starring Michael Douglas, Sean Penn and Deborah Kara Unger. Nicolas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) is a wealthy investment banker who puts his work before his personal life. On his 48th birthday, his younger brother Conrad (Sean Penn) presents Nicolas with a gift aimed to add a little fun to his life - an invitation to visit the offices of Consumer Recreation Services (CRS) and participate in a "game" specifically tailored to his needs. Nicolas soon regrets the decision to find out more about CRS, when he is subjected to more and more sinister pranks. With the aid of a waitress called ...  Read the complete review

Its difficult to review a movie like The Game without giving away too much of its plot and ideas that you you ruin it for any reader who has never seen it before. This is the third time of writing this for me, having tried to include as many elements as possible to stimulate your interest in the movie without spoiling it as a viewing experience. I failed each time, eventually I have given up, but I do still want to recommend this to you all..so here goes, sparse on info. though it may be. The Game is a movie from the same director who also gave us Se7en, Fight Club and Alien 3. Whilst Se7en is pretty much widely regarded as a supreme piece of film making, the ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

Are we the pawns in somebody else's game? Is what you're seeing right now real? Maybe you're dreaming that this is reality and what you think is a dream is real-life. Nothing is ever as it seems... If you ever ask yourself these sort of questions then this film would be a great place to start... Directed by David Fincher, "The Game" (15) is a psychological thriller centring around Nicholas Van Orton (Michael Douglas) a financial executive who is sucked into a world of disbelief and fantasy. His brother Conrad (Sean Penn) casually gives him a gift certificate for his birthday claiming that it will change his life and will give him ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Who Do You Trust (545 words)
by - written on 30/10/01 (Very useful, 69 readings)
Rating:

Before I get into writing my opinion let me introduce you to the main characters of the film. CHARACTERS ********** Nicholas Van Orton ------------------- Nicholas is a super rich Financial Executive, played by Michael Douglas. Nicholas lives for his work and basically has nothing else outside of his work. Is very lonely but either doesn't know it or won't admit it. Conrad Van Orton ----------------- Conrad is played by Sean Penn and is Nicholas's brother. Conrad's character is very much the black sheep of the family, the one who is the joker, or has always needed rescuing or bailed out of ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Game (DVD): Rich mans idea of fun? (223 words)
by - written on 07/09/00 (Very useful, 27 readings)
Rating:

The game stars Michael Douglas and Sean Penn in a fabulously intriguing film about a birthday present given to multi millionaire Nicholas Van Orton (Douglas), the man who has everything, or does he? This ‘gift’ is given to him by his younger rebellious brother Conrad (Penn). The idea behind it, they take what is most lacking in your life and give it to you. You won’t know when your game is going to begin and the object of the game is to discover the object of the game! The somewhat reluctant Nicholas agrees to do it but is turned down as unsuitable or is he? Is this really a birthday present or a set up? Whatever it is will take ...  Read the complete review
