 The Gauntlet (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 23 August, 1999 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Clint Eastwood is a down-and-out cop who is sent on a routine mission to pick up a witness and deliver her to the Phoenix courthouse. Sounds easy until he realises he's been set up by the man who gave him this simple assignment. The interplay between Eastwood and the witness, a clever prostitute played by the actor's former girlfriend, Sondra Locke, is tough and playful. They obviously had strong chemistry. The story is highly implausible at times, but the action sequences are satisfying. Eastwood directs The Gauntlet very much in the style of his Academy Award-winning Western Unforgiven. Although the body count is surprisingly low for an Eastwood action film, a house, several cars and a large bus get shot through with more holes than a big wheel of Swiss cheese. Clearly, there aren't many sources of legal employment for such graduates in Vegas, and so she's been forced to earn her crust via prostitution, the poor bairn.

This is very possibly the worst action movie ever. This review contains major spoilers, but seriously, this is such a bad film it probably doesn't matter too much. The plot of this flick is incredibly simple. Clint Eastwood plays a drunken cop who is told to go and pick up a convict from Vegas and fly her to Arizona. Though he is told that she's a prostitute and a completely inconsequential witness in a trial, it turns out that her testimony is vital to proving a link between Clint's police boss has links to the mob.
