... it's a thirty minute torture scene wrapped up with gore and cold, pointless death. The acting is wooden, the dialogue is laughable and there is no valid reason why this film should ever have been made. I would be ashamed to say I was in any way a part of the production of it because it's one thing to watch fictional characters in a fictional world, but another to regard true events as horrifying as those which Sylvia Likens endured, as entertainment. There is no real underlying message, although they do embarras...more

A REVIEW ON THE MOVIE. *PLEASE NOTE, THERE ARE SOME GRAPHIC DESCRIPTIONS OF VIOLENCE AND TORTURE IN THIS REVIEW AND MAY CONTAIN THE ODD SPOILER* This is something I wouldn't normally watch because it's not enjoyable to see a young girl being tortured while in the care of her aunt, knowing this was all based on true events. CAST -- Directed by: Gregory Wilson Starring: Blanche Baker -as- Ruth Chandler Blythe Auffarth -as- Meg Loughlin Daniel Manche -as- David Moran Kevin Chamberlin -as- Officer Jennings Madeline Taylor -as- Susan Loughlin Year: 2007 Running ...  Read the complete review

This year started disturbingly with a movie called The Girl Next Door, don't go thinking I have softened up by watching a romcom, although I have had my moments. This is not the 2004 movie starring Elisha Cuthbert, but something far darker. Starting with a feel of Stephen Kings IT or Stand By Me, actor William Atherton (Hindenberg)tries to save a man on New York's busy streets; in doing so he is given the opportunity to reminisce on his past. Back in the 1950's young David now played by Daniel Manche is enjoying a bright summer day by a river catching crayfish. His joviality is heightened by the arrival of Meg (Blythe Auffarth) a slightly older girl with a charming ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Girl Next Door [2007] (DVD): Abuse, rape and torture, not a good mix (845 words)

After reading the reviews on here about this film I was in two minds about watching it. I'd heard about it from some friends and it sounded gruesome but its based on a true life story and I love that kind of film. I rationalised with myself that what ever I saw happened to someone, to watch it was to learn kind of thing. I was so scared of watching it though! The film is seen and told from Daveys point. He is seen at the beginning of the film as a much older guy reminiscing about the past, which we are then taken in to the story of by him, back in the 1950's. He's a young boy and is brought up in a decent neighbourhood with a group of young lads. They spent ...  Read the complete review

Horrors are no longer horrors. They are focused entirely on shocking and disturbing the viewer and pleasing the sick and twisted minority who genuinely enjoy watching torture and rape. It has become popular to fabricate "deep layered meanings" within these torture movies that simply don't exist. Let's take Martyrs for instance; it apparently showcases the strength of the human spirit when in reality it's a thirty minute torture scene wrapped up with gore and cold, pointless death. The acting is wooden, the dialogue is laughable and there is no valid reason why this film should ever have been made.
