Director Steven Soderbergh(Ocean's Eleven-Twelve-Thirteen,Erin Brokhovich,Traffic) chooses adult star Sasha Grey to star in The Girlfriend Experience.
Sasha plays Chelsea,a high class escort who is also in a commited relationship. The film basically gives us a peek at a few days in her life, how she juggles her relationship with her clients, her boyfriend Chris and her future career aspirations.Chelsea also meets a new client in that space of time who seems to be interesting.
Steven Soderbergh picks up an interesting concept, and treats it in his own unique way-the film is told from the girl's point of view, more like a diary form which makes it quite different. The story decides to focus on her portions which makes it more worthy.Running for only 77minutes,it never bores you or makes you disinterested.
The screenplay, dialogues are well wriiten. If you think a film on an escort needs to focus more on vulgur and sexually explicit scenes, you might be quite surprised after seeing this.On the contrary,it is filled with dialogues, conversations taking place between characters, and at times conversation by herself.Soderbrergh's placement of camera is another thing that fascinated me;he keeps it at hidden spots which makes the scenes more candid and realistic. The relationship aspect does make the film more meaningful and makes you wonder for some minutes. The ending is pretty well done.
Sasha Grey as Chelsea has to be one of the fluent performances of last year. She provides a realistic performance, and the film actually rests solely on her performance since she is the main focus.
The Girlfriend Experience is refreshingly different.Watch it!
