Advantages: Stellar acting from Brando and Pacino

Disadvantages: A bit dated, with a slow and fairly dull wedding scene at start

The Godfather is often rated the top film of all time (IMDB.com for example), and I can see why. Starring Marlon Brando and a young Al Pacino, it tells the tale of the Corleone family, Italian gangsters in New York. It's an authentic Italian mafia movie that spawned the birth of 100 others.

Powered by strong performances, these don't get any stronger than Brando and Pacino. Both combine a dignified performance with unbridled power and strength. It can be argued that it is the finest performance both actors have ever given (although I prefer Pacino in Scarface myself).

For a modern audience, some of the movie is outdated. The wedding scene at the start is long and fairly dull, and there are plenty more accessible gangster flicks for the casual film-fan (goodfellas being the first that springs to mind). But anyone serious about gangster films needs to start here, at the genesis of the genre.

What I love the most about this film is the transformation Pacino undergoes as it progresses. I don't want to give too much away, but the world's best actor pulls out a stunning performance in this epic tale.

Summary: The gangster flick that spawned a generation of film making

A brief outline of the storyline (without giving too much away) would make this review more useful. I know that it's about the mafia in New York, but in what way?

I still think this is over-rated.
