The Good Shepherd (DVD) ... April, 2007 at Universal Studios / Features of the DVD: AC-3, Dolby, Dubbed, DVD-Video, Extra tracks, Subtitled, Widescreen, NTSC / One man bears witness to the secret history of America during the Cold War in this drama directed by celebrated actor Robert De Niro. In 1939, Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) is a young man with a bright future ahead of him -- he's a top student at Yale and the protg of one of the school's leading English professors, Dr. Fredericks (Michael Gambon). But Wilson's life changes dramatically when he's invited to join Yale's powerful secret society, Skull and Bones. Through his Skull and Bones connections, Wilson meets Sam Murach (Alec Baldwin), an mysterious FBI agent who asks Wilson to investigate charges that Fredericks is a Nazi sympathizer working with the German government. Later, at a Skull and Bones party, Wilson is introduced to Clover Russell (Angelina Jolie), the sister of one of his classmates and the daughter of a powerful politician; their one-night stand leaves Clover pregnant, and Wilson must leave the woman he loves, Laura (Tammy Blanchard), to wed Clover and give their child a name. Shortly after their wedding, thanks to his work with Murach, Wilson is invited to join the Office of Strategic Services, a military intelligence organization organized by Bill Sullivan (Robert De Niro), and Wilson accepts. Through World War II, Wilson serves with the OSS, and learns he can trust no one in the game of international espionage, which helps make him little more than a stranger to his wife, his son, and his few friends. As the OSS evolves into the Central Intelligence Agency after the war, Wilson becomes party to America's darkest and most dangerous secrets, and in the wake of the futile Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, Wilson is forced to make a terrible choice between the security of his nation and the safety of his family. Inspired by the true-life story of CIA founder James J. Angleton, The Good Shepherd boasts an impressive supporting cast, including William Hurt, John Turturro, Billy Crudup, Joe Pesci, and Timothy Hutton.

... Pictures. Once Matt Damon came on board after the success of the Departed the film was always going to be made. DeNiro as director you can understand as he like these long winded biopic/family saga scenarios, to the point where he and Joe Pesci cameo again together again, Joes first film for 8 years, DeNiros lucky charm if you like. Matt Damon, off course, always takes scripts that will make him appear cerebral in movies because he is that guy in real life and so can carry off, a Harvard boy no less. But you still fee...more

Premium Review The Good Shepherd (DVD): Like Counting Sheep (649 words)
by - written on 17/11/07 (Very useful, 80 readings)
Rating:

A Shepherd’s job is to watch his flock, part of it is counting sheep and that’s exactly how I felt after sitting through nearly three hours of The Good Shepherd. The film tells the story of the birth of the CIA through one man’s eyes. Matt Damon takes the lead role of Edward, a young man, Yale educated who is taken into a time honoured secret society and set upon a path of spying, gathering intelligence and trusting no one. We see a dedication to a job that makes him virtually devoid of any emotion, making his family life almost non-existent. It doesn’t help when he knocks up an alluring Angelina Jolie and has to get married. The thing with The Good ...  Read the complete review

The CIA`s motto is: 'You only hear about our successes', so I`m rather suprised they didnt deploy some sort of illicit tactic to stop you guys seeing this rather boring movie about them. I suppose they will have to leave it up to people like me to put you off. The Good Shepherd is not exactly the most exciting spy film to come out of Hollywood. Yes its an interesting look at the first three decades of the C.I.A, America's overseas intelligence service, but its not the quality you would expect from its director Robert DeNiro and star Matt 'Jason Bourne' Damon. This is a two-and-a-half-hour drag guys. Unscrupulous and murderous at the best of times, its always ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Good Shepherd (DVD): Spying's Not All Fun & Games (569 words)

Spying's Not All Fun & Games =================== The CIA has always been a very dark and shadowy place where secrets and lies rule to roost. This has given the agency a controversial yet fascinating view in the public eye. By it's very nature facts are a long time to come to the public's attention, if they ever are at all. This film attempts to show this world. If there's one thing this film shows is that being a spy is a lonely profession, even your friends can turn out to be enemies. Jason Bourne, sorry I mean Matt Damon plays Edward Wilson, the central character. He is taken into a secret society at University and baptised ...  Read the complete review

The cast list looked excellent with some big name stars and in particular ones I liked and Robert De Niro one of the all time greats was the director so how could this film fail? Well after three hours of bum numbing boredom it managed to fail big time. Cast List Matt Damon ... Edward Wilson Angelina Jolie ... Margaret 'Clover' Russell Alec Baldwin ... Sam Murach Tammy Blanchard ... Laura Billy Crudup ... Arch Cummings Robert De Niro ... Bill Sullivan Keir Dullea ... Senator John Russell, Sr. Michael Gambon ... Dr. Fredericks Martina Gedeck ... “The Good Shepherd is not recommended…[it] will put you to sleep” Robert De Niro (A Bronx Tale) directs and stars in a film concerning the birth of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). It was a few months ago now, but upon sitting down in the cinema I had high hopes for this movie. With numerous academy award winners cast, and having seen a very promising trailer, what could possibly go wrong? ‘Everything’ I am afraid to report. Unfortunately a great cast on paper does not mean a fabulous film. Read on if you want to find out the reasons The Good Shepherd was such a letdown, and film that should be avoided at all costs. --------What ...  Read the complete review
