The Goonies (DVD)
Advantages: Enchanting and not just for kids
This is a review of The Goonies (1985) a film which me and my sister have loved since our childhood and will watch every time it comes on TV, although we both also own it on DVD for whenever we need a Goonies fix. It's that bad that if I glance at her when she's watching it I can sometimes see her lips moving in line with the characters. I find myself muttering "I got it I got it" when something's slipping from my hand then "I don't got it" when I drop it! I know from the plethora of movie merchandise available that me and my sister are not alone in our Goonies fixation; she got a bag with Chunk doing the Truffle Shuffle for Christmas...
A bit about
The Goonies features four friends and an elder brother and his two friends (girls) that are about to go on the adventure of a lifetime. The two brothers live in a house they call the goondocks (their group's headquarters) and the boys find out that his Dad is losing the house due to a local developer who wants to build a golf course on the land. He can't afford to pay for the house and the children are devastated. Mikey, the younger brother is determined that they should do something to save the Goondocks and tells his friends about an old story he heard about a pirate called One Eyed Willy who has buried his treasure nearby. If they can find the treasure they can save the house.
In following the trail of One Eyed Willy, the boys soon bump into a local family of criminals, the Fratellis (sounds familiar?!) who cotton on to the boy's ambition to find the 'rich stuff'. Chunk (the chubby one) makes friends with the disfigured son of the Fratellis called Sloth and their friendship becomes important as the film progresses. Out of the two girls, Andi (the pretty one) is torn between the property developer's son Troy and Mikey's big brother Brand. She knows how to play her femininity though and is always trying to get Brand on his own for a kiss. She is shocked when she kisses him in the dark and finds he has braces on before she realises she just kissed the younger kid Mikey!
There are just too many good bits to mention here but if I'm pushed, I'd say Chunk in the Fratellis' freezer with the dead guy is pretty funny. He is so scared he can't get his words out, never mind shout for help. He goes from listing all the ice cream flavours he can see to gasping the word 'corpse' but it's not really that scary for kids watching as the corpse doesn't look all that real.
If you have never seen the Goonies, please watch it just for me, don't think it's just a film for children. It's a classic 80s film and there are so many people I know who will name it as their favourite film so there must be something about it. I must have watched this around a hundred times at least! I still see bits in it that I didn't notice before and still enjoy watching it today.
Summary: I could watch this again and again
