Advantages: Lots !!

Disadvantages: Different to the book, but still wonderful.

This has got to be my favourite Christmas movie EVER !! It's based loosely on the book "How the Grinch stole Christmas" by Dr Seuss and it's Jim Carrey as The Grinch which just makes it the fantastic film it is. It's great for all the family and for any age and my daughter and I have been watching this every Christmas for years since it was released !!
As noted already, the male lead is The Grinch himself (played by Jim Carrey ) and the role of the young Who-ville inhabitant Cindy-Lou is played by Taylor Momsen and it is their relationship in this film that changes the lives of everyone including the Grinch himself. The story begins in Who-ville leading up to Christmas time and the inhabitants of Who-ville are busy buying, wrapping and sending presents like there's no tomorrow. However, on Who-ville resident Cindy Lou feels as though this is not what Christmas should be about, that it shouldn't be about 'things' and 'presents' and feasts but that's about spending time together in celebration. Of course those around her do not agree and go about their mad shopping sprees. Up on the mountain however lives The Grinch and we find out later in the film that ever seen he was a child and a bad experience at Christmas time, he has lived alone ( except for his dog Max who is just so sweet ) since this time and has vowed never to celebrate Christmas and because of this and his less-than-friendly ways his heart is small and The Grinch takes much joy in carrying out not-so-nice tasks so that his heart shrinks even more. The Grinch looks down on Who-Ville at this time and sees the same that he witnesses every year, too much presents, too much food, too much of everything and this only reinforces his promise to never celebrate Christmas again. However, one day at the post office, The Grinch turns up to cause mayhem for the Who's Christmas and this is where he meets Mary Lou for the first time. He presumes that she would be frightened of him, but this is not the case although she does fall into a mail-sorting type machine out of surprise and uncharacteristically The Grinch saves Mary Lou ( although when she thanks him for saving her he's horrified at the thought and wraps her up as a package !! LOL !! ) However, from this moment on Mary Lou does all she can to find out more about The Grinch and finds out about his past at Christmas time and vows to help him. Lots happens in Cindy Lou's aid to reintroduce The Grinch back into Who-ville society but things go from bad to worse and it isn't until The Grinch steals Christmas ( the food, the decorations, the presents, the Christmas trees etc ) from all the Who's houses that things change. Mary Lou realises what has happened and whilst the inhabitants of Who-Ville are in mourning for their lost Christmas she speaks to the village and explains that Christmas shouldn't be about 'things' it should be about being together and with the help of her father realise that what Mary Lou is saying is right. Of course The Grinch is gutted when he looks down at the town and sees them singing and rejoicing even though he has stolen their Christmas and he too realises at that moment the true meaning of Christmas and as a result his heart grows three sizes. During this time Mary Lou has sneaked away to visit The Grinch and she makes it up the mountain at the same time as the sleigh, with all the Who-ville Christmas goodies, begins to slip down the mountain. The Grinch in with his new enlarged heart sets out to try and save the sleigh but it seems to be slipping, but when he sees that Mary Lou is on the sleigh he pulls the stops out to save both Mary Lou and the sleigh and together they ride down to Who-ville on the sleigh with all the Who-ville goodies. The film ends with The Grinch holding a massive Christmas dinner up at his Mountain cave with all the Who-ville residents present.

It's a touching and very entertaining film !!It's so funny and Jim Carrey brings the funny-factor to the film whilst Taylor Momsen as Mary Lou and Max the dog bring the "Awwwww" factor !! A great film for all the family but quite different to the book, although the essence of the story is still the same.

Summary: An entertaining Christmas movie for all the family to enjoy !!
