Advantages: Starts Ok but quickly decends

Disadvantages: Not one of the best plots - One of the worst endings ever

The Happening is a film that was released in 2008 and was direct by M Night Shyamalan and starred Mark Wahlberg in the leading role. The only reason that I watched the film was because it was being shown on Sky Movies and there was nothing else on, for this reason this review will only be of the film and not of the extras that would normally be found on the DVD version.

The start of the movie is a cold opening, starting in a classroom before moving to people in a park, with everybody around them suddenly stopping, then moving again, becoming confused and then committing suicide. We are then introduced into two of the characters of the film, Elliot Moore played by Wahlberg, and Julian played by John Leguizamo. The first is a science teacher and the second is a maths teacher in a school of the city where the bizarre opening sequence just took place, so they decide to leave the city and meet up with Moore's Wife played by Zooey Deschanel. The rest of the movie is spent watching the characters trying to escape the force that is making everybody take their own lives.

In terms of the characters it could be said that they are quite bland and when I was watching the film I found it difficult to relate to the characters. What was also bizarre, was the main character of Moore was viewed by all the other characters as having the answers when all he was, was a science teacher. Throughout the film we are also introduced to a large number of characters, that really I saw no point of being introduced, but I won't say why as it will spoil the film.

Overall I would say that the film was quite disappointing, in both the characters and the plot of the film, as while it may have been plausible it just seem a little too farfetched and most important of all the end is one of the worst that I have encountered in a film, you will know what I mean if you watch the film, as the end just fizzles out.

One problem that I felt about the film was there was too much emphasis on the eco notion of the film that was being pushed about climate change.

I was expecting something a bit better M Night Shyamalan, as seen from his previous films such as the Sixth Sense and Signs. As really it does not seem to be a good story that is good enough to have been made into the movie, as the best way to describe the story is a joke without the punch line. What I felt at the end of the movie was that I waste an hour and half of my life that I would never get back.

Summary: One of the worst fillms ever

I think it would have been better if Wahlberg wasn't the star, people expected something different. Like others have said, an interesting film, shame it wasn't as good as it should have been.

I agree with Luigi- it was an interesting concept and made me think ... and view trees with suspicion!
