Advantages: It has Stiller in it

Disadvantages: Not funny enough and disappointing from Stiller

I am a huge fan of Ben Stiller, so it really saddens me to say this but 'The Heartbreak Kid' is just one of those movies that he should never have made. Maybe an up and coming comedy actor would have been right for this role, but you expect so much more from Ben's films and he usually delivers so much more.

The basic plot of the movie is that 40 year old Eddie Cantrow (Stiller) has never really got close to settling down and is under pressure from his friends and father to do so. One day he meets this girl in distress and helps her out. He thinks about her a lot and to his joy she comes looking for him. To cut a long story short, she was about to move away for a couple of years as her employers only send un-married people away, so Eddie decides to marry her straight away as he doesn't want to risk losing her. Please bear in mind that they had only been together 3 weeks so it doesn't take a genius to work out what will happen next. Basically, on route to their honeymoon and throughout the whole time they are there, she just becomes more and more of a living nightmare for Eddie and this leads to the very few and far between comedy moments that Stiller provides.

Possibly the funniest part of the film is the car journey where she just sings and sings and sings some more and the face on Stiller is just so funny that he doesn't even have to say anything. Sadly though, there are not enough moments like this in the film and you are basically left with a romantic movie with a tiny bit of comedy. It is certainly not in the same league as 'Meet the Family'.

The DVD extras are the usual kind of out takes and behind the scenes segments that we have come to expect from Stiller DVDs so these don't really add much to what is an extremely average movie.

To summarise, I did enjoy the movie for what it was, but for a Stiller movie, I was left ultimately disappointed with the complete lack of belly laugh moments that occurred.

Summary: The movie Stiller should never have made

I didn't like this either. I would like to see the 1972 original version however - it's mean to be very good.
