Mexican love triangle ! (The Heartbreak Kid (DVD))

I quite enjoyed this movie, certainly not a comedy classic but it does have some real laugh out loud moments. It centres on 40 something Eddie (Stiller), sportshop owner and nice guy who after being humiliated at his ex-fiancee's wedding finally succumbs to the pressure from his friend Mac and philandering father (Jerry Stiller, the dad in King of Queens) and marries in haste to the lovely Lila ( Malin Akerman - Watchmen) who he sort of rescued from a street mugging.

Repenting at leisure, on the journey to their Mexican honeymoon, her non-stop singing begins to grate but it's nothing compared to the other delights this fully paid up mentalist has in store him. A cocaine ravaged nose (that doesn't hold drink too well), her career turns out to be voluntary work and a "robust" attitude towards love-making leave poor Eddie with no choice but to end it and end it soon. Matters are complicated when he falls in with a Deep South family and particular the charms of the beautiful Miranda (Helen Monaghan - Eagle Eye) who is led to believe he's a widower.

All sorts of shenanigans inevitably occur with Eddie trying to lead a double life on his honeymoon. It's a bit of Carry On Abroad with sex and swearing but the hirsute Lila does have her uses, soothing the pain when Eddie is stung by a Portuguese Man-o-War (hilarious)! Great performances from both Akerman as the beautiful, but bonkers wife and Monaghan as the equally pretty husky voiced temptress. Stiller snr is also excellent as the straight talking playboy dad.

Blokes who have had a nutter girlfriend (that's all of us!) will definitely be able to relate to this. A little bit patchy but worth a look, if only for the jellyfish and the brilliant "happy ending" (7/10)
