 ... sequel to a successful movie, you really need to have a reason for doing so and a good idea to make it worthwhile. Despite the obvious lure of the capital waiting to be cashed in, good sequels add something to their predecessor without ruining the essence of the first film. The worst thing that a filmmaker could possibly do would be to make a low-budget sequel to a big budget film (Tremors 2 anyone) without really having any good ideas to try and spice things up with. In the 1980s, a cult horror/thriller film called The Hitcher was released to a fairly rapturous audience. The story line was quite simple. A young man is travelling along a road, when he picks up a hitchhiker. Very quickly, it turns out that the hitchhiker is a bit of a psychopath, but as fast as his poor victim tries to get away from him, he finds himself framed for a variety of gruesome murders. It was a good movie. Fast-forward to 2003 and somebody has decided that, in his/her infinite wisdom, it could be a good idea to make a sequel to the 1986 original. Oh dear.
