The Host (2 DVDs) ... 05 March, 2007 at Optimum Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / The Host has managed to become Korea's most successful film to date, winning acclaim both domestically and internationally, and it's easy to see why. At first glance, it looks like any other monster movie--an amphibious creature from the depths stalks and devours an urban population--but there's actually much, much more going on beneath the surface. Not that there needs to be: although it has a fairly hefty 119-minute runtime, The Host is fast moving, with plenty of action and a truly gruesome-looking monster. Visually, it's a gorgeous movie, with stunning special effects and beautiful settings (even the rather nasty sewer scenes look perversely great). However, the real crux of The Host isn't really anything to do with the monster: at heart, this is a family drama, not a horror movie. The story focuses on one small family and how they react to the weird goings-on all around them. When the youngest member of the family, Hyun-seo, is snatched by the titular monster, the family is devastated until a call from her mobile phone gives them fresh hope. Unfortunately, everyone who came into contact with the being has been quarantined due to a virus scare, so they have to escape the Korean authorities to go on a rescue mission. Then the American army steps in, and all hell breaks loose... It's a very original idea, with nuanced and well-written characters, plenty of humour, and a darker undercurrent of social and political commentary, topped off with a thrilling monster-killing adventure. Brilliant, in other words. --Sarah Dobbs

... turning the waste into a monster that then attacks the people of Korea. The film opens with just such a scene, of an uncaring U.S. scientist instructing a reluctant Korean to dump over 100 bottles of formaldehyde down the drain, which leads to the Han River and allows a monstrous form to gestate down there, which emerges and begins massacring the city. One of the denizens is Park Gang-du (Song Kang-ho), a slow but affable man who runs a noodle bar with his Hee-bong (Byeon Hee-bong). Along with their family, they are ...more

Premium Review The Host (2 DVDs): Hostess with the Grotesque. (1134 words)

Reading out the cast list for Korean movies is like singing the Crazy Frog ring tone, all manner of ding bong dangs...! Watching their movies, on the other hand, is anything but banal. There's a new world opening up to western film fans from this part of the world right now and I have yet to see a duff movie coming out of it. This engaging effort that reflects this emerging and energetic country is a film that's unique in one crucial aspect of the horror genre it sits in: it uses cell phones to its advantage, not dismiss them as irrelevant scene spoilers. Instead of the lame excuses of 'dead battery'or 'no signal', as danger approaches, 'The Host' embraces the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Host (2 DVDs): Man-Made Monstrosities (654 words)

Everyone loves dysfunctional families. From the Simpsons to the Bundys, the Royal Tenenbaums to the Hoovers of Little Miss Sunshine, there's a rich tradition of feuding, messed-up, but ultimately loveable families on small and big screens. The Host features onesuch of these families - Park Gang-du and father, daughter, brother and sister, encamped in a snack bar by Seoul's Han River. The makers of this 2006 Korean film seem to have asked themselves, however; "How do you make a film about a dysfunctional family better, make it stand out?" The answer they came up with? Throw in a mutant fish monster terrorising the city, of course. The Host, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review And Here's Your Host for This Evening... (1187 words)

The Host is one of those quirky little films that you either love or hate. It's either a fun, if inconsequential movie, or a complete waste of time. Conclusions have been drawn with Lake Placid, in terms of its mix of horror and humour. Whilst The Host might fall a little short of those standards, it's a handy benchmark to judge whether this is your type of film or not. The plot of The Host could not be simpler. A monster suddenly emerges from a river in a Korean City, causing death and chaos. It takes a number of people back to its lair, including a little girl, whose father swears he will get her back. Simplicity is one of the best things about ...  Read the complete review
