Advantages: Funny, easy to follow plot.
Disadvantages: Annoying lead character, transparant storyline.
Whilst doing a mystery shop at my local Cineworld a few months ago I saw a trailer for House Bunny and thought I would enjoy it as it seemed to be similar to other films like Legally Blonde and Clueless, my husband on the other hand was not so keen and told me to watch it without him.
After retiring to bed early one night I decided to put on the film as it wouldn't be too much to concentrate on and when my husband started watching it with me he was soon enjoying it.
The film was written by Legally Blonde screenwriters Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah Lutz.
Shelley played by Anna Faris (famous from Scary Movie) is a carefree attractive 27 year old, she lives in the Playboy Mansion with Hugh Heffner and the other playboy bunnies and she loves her life, that is until she is evicted from the Mansion and she is homeless.
As she wonders what she is going to do, she overhears some girls talking about a party and decides to tag along and finds herself in a sorority house, thinking she can just ask to live there she first encounters Ashley who is extremely stuck up and treats Shelley as a bimbo, Shelley overhears a group of ladies in the living room and finds out that they are called House mothers and she decides this is what she wants to be and interrupts the conversation and asks if she can be a housemother too, they instantly reject her until one of the housemothers suggest she try Zeta who do not have a house mother.
Shelley soon finds Zeta and meets the leader of the Zeta household Natalie played by Emma Stone, they are complete opposites and with Zeta facing the prospect of losing their house, Natalie rejects Shelley's offer of becoming house mother that is until they members of Zeta see the attention that Shelley gets in her very skimpy outfits and decide to give her the benefit of the doubt.
Desperate to keep their house, Shelley sets a plan in motion to change the geeky girls into attractive girls that through great parties and to try and get pledges to keep their house.
Shelley learns a lot about herself as the girls change in order to get the pledges and to keep the house and Natalie finally gets the attention of her crush, Colby and with help from Shelley she learns how to flirt.
The girls soon become hot stuff and their house starts throwing the most talked about parties, this causes problems for sorority Phi Iota Mu as they begin to lack in popularity and Ashley and her fellow members set about ruining the new found popularity of Zeta in order to gain their house.
Will they succeed? Will the girls keep up the pretence of being hot attractive members of campus or will they revert back to their old ways? What will become of Shelley and will she ever be a playboy bunny again and find out the real reason as to why she was evicted from the Playboy Mansion?
The only way to find out the plotline and the ending is to watch the film as there is much more to it than I have mentioned.
*~*My Opinion*~*
The story itself is pretty transparant but the film is still pretty entertaining.
Anna Faris is one of the most annoying actresses out there, her squeaky voice makes me want to cover my ears, but she seems ideal for the character that she is playing.
The other characters seem well cast and all seem to play their parts well.
I feel that this is definately a feel good movie as Shelley brings out the best in each of the characters. As I first mentioned at the beginning of the review however this film will be liked if you enjoy films such as Legally Blonde or Clueless, maybe this is because the storylines are all so similar bitchy characters, dumb blondes falling for the brainy guys.
I did like the film as it was not a brain numbingly boring as other chick flick films that I have watched but it is not something that I would consider parting hard cash for to own on DVD.
Get it as a rental if you have teenagers or if your in your early twenties, any older than that then you will wonder why on earth you wasted an hour and a half of your time..
I laughed and I also empathised with the characters as you can relate to the emotions being portrayed by the characters as they face competition from the most popular girls on campus and the way they treat them like something they have stepped on but ultimately at the end of the film you will have a warm fuzzy feeling and think it was not all that bad.
Summary: I liked it but I didn't love it and it will be like marmite you will love it or hate it.
