The Hudsucker Proxy is a 1994 comedy written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It's 1958 and following the suicide of Wareing Hudsucker, the board of directors for Hudsucker Industries, at the prompting of the ambitious Sid Mussburger (the late, great Paul Newman) decide that they need to cause the value of stocks to plummet so they can buy them up before they become available to the public. In order to do this, they require an incompetent stooge to be acting head of the company - enter naive smalltown college graduate Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins). Thinking that it will depreciate shares further, they allow Norville to mass produce his toy invention, the ... Read the complete review

Seeing as Dooyoo somehow swallowed this review yesterday during the downtime, I thought I'd better resubmit it! Now this low key Coen Brothers film is one that I have been on the lookout for, for what seems like years! Last month I just happened to be in HMV and I spotted a solitary copy out of the corner of my eye, for a very pocket pleasing £4.99. Anyway.... to the nitty gritty.... The Hudsucker Proxy is a Coen brothers film and centres on Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins) who has just started working at Hudsucker Industries. When Waring Hudsucker, the head of the company, commits suicide by jumping out of a window and plummeting to his death, the board of directors hit upon a plan to make a lot of money. If they get someone very inexperienced and well, stupid, to run the company it'll send the company stocks falling, and then the board, led by Sidney Mussberger (Paul Newman) can buy the whole company very cheaply and restore the fortunes of the company! However, reporter Amy Archer (Jennifer Jason Leigh) thinks something smells fishy and ... Read the complete review

The Coen Brothers vivid caracature of the corporate ladder climb. Tim Robbins plays the lead, in this extremely tongue in cheek fantasy, he has designed the latest revolutionary toy that the bigwigs are creaming over. A simple scrap of paper with a circle drawn on it, "You know...for kids", he exclaims", and so the Hula-hoop is born. The film throws you straight into it's fairytale dreamscape from the outset when a coporate high-flier jumps from a building and caught in freeze-frame (awesome FX) the narrative continues. A real bedtime story affair. If you have seen any of their other films such as The Big Lebowski, Barton Fink or Raising ... Read the complete review
