Advantages: A brilliant story-line, and a fantastic soundtrack

Disadvantages: Expensive to buy on DVD

Disney's 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' based on the book by Victor Hugo, both captivates and inspires us by the heart-warming characters. As in all the Disney Classics, there is the typical villain, but perhaps Claude Frollo, is one of the most dangerous and chilling of the villains. Look-wise he is nothing scary; he has no crazy black and white hair as Cruella Devil does, he doesn't have tentacles like Ursula, rather he is just an ordinary man whose 'clutches were iron as much as the bells'. He believes in the inferiority of other types of people, and has no guilt in 'getting rid' of them. He is obsessively sexually attracted to the gypsy girl, Esmerelda, and sings 'Choose me or you will burn'. Perhaps he is the scariest Disney villain, because he is the most realistic, and there have been real-life villains like him.

The film is set in Paris and opens with the brilliant song of 'Bells of Notre Dame'. This song sets the scene and the theme for the film, and we are left with the question, 'Who is the monster and who is the man?'

The plot centres on a deformed hunchback called Quasimodo, who is made to live in the bell tower of the Notre Dame. However, he wishes for more of a life than this. One day, he rebels against his master, Claude Frollo, and goes to the 'Carnival of Fools'. Sadly, though, he himself is made a fool of, but fortunately, during this outing meets the gypsy girl, Esmerelda.

When Frollo wants to get rid of all the gypsies in Paris, Quasimodo is torn between loyalty to his master, and his love for Esmerelda.

The soundtrack to this film is brilliant, as well as a fantastic storyline, and a captivating take on Paris

Summary: An inspiring and beautiful storyline and soundtrack
