Film Only Review:
Every year two young people of varying ages are picked at random to take part in a huge television show that sees them fight to the death to win the game, being 12 districts that's 24 people taking part. We see Primrose picked to be one of the 'Tributes' from District 12, a terrified young girl who has been scared to death of being called up but her brave and loving older sister Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) screams to take her place and is allowed to at the live drawing of the names. At the same time the boy from District 12 is called, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and off they go to the futuristic place of Capitol where the 'games' take place.
Once they're there they have people to help guide them through whats about to happen and to help prepare them, a previous winner Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), stylist Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), and chaperone Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) all of which route for them and try to guide them through everything they need to know and make them see what exactly they are involved in and the importance of stepping up....its life or death afterall.
First off both need sponsors to help them in the game which takes place outdoors where the youngsters are let run riot with weapons to kill the other and the sponsors leave food for them and bits and pieces to help them win, Katniss however is a bit of a cold fish and enticing them to sponsor her is tricky and a bit of a worry at first. From the opening ceremony of the games and her entrance she turns up as the girl on fire, continuing the theme when interviewed on the pre game tv show she wows the audience and starts to make a name for herself but is unimpressed by Peeta's tv interview where he lets slip he's always had a thing for her.
Once out playing the game can Katniss find her will and strength to survive against people who are willing to kill her or will a friendship she makes whilst running and killing for life jeopardise her safety and in the middle of the chaos on the battlefield could love blossom between her and a boy that obviously adores her and what could possibly be the outcome of that when only one person can survive these games?
My Opinion:
I had this dvd on its release day due to all the good things I had heard about it from people, including reviews on here but me...well I wasn't keen at all on it and kept getting bored, pausing it and returning cos I just couldn't get to grips with it at all.
For me there were some good factors of course. The film was carried really well by Jennifer Lawrence it has to be said and she deserves an Oscar and whatever else she can be handed for her portrayal of a very strong and feisty young lady. When she looked terrified, lost and a whole host of other emotions I felt it and believed it however the story just wasn't that great. For me its like a bit like a wannabe Twilight saga and knowing that there are three books so far in this series we can rest assured more films are going to follow and there is a guy in the film that is shown at the beginning and end of the film (cant remember his name though as he hasn't a big role to play lol) that looks to me that could cause a love triangle situation...again like Twilight in the future!
The scenery is superb but its everything else really, the ending was good but it wasn't a surprising one to me for some reason it just didn't grip me all that much and for me this was a hugely disappointing film and a bit boring!
Rated 13 I think that's about right as there is a little violence within it though you don't see too much for me this is one to watch on a Sunday afternoon but for me this is a case of over egging the pudding sadly!
Summary: I couldn't get to grips with this at all and don't see what all the hype is about!
