Advantages: Great tension created in the film
Disadvantages: Limited character range
I would describe this film as a tension filled rollercoaster of a film that had me literally sitting on the edge of my seat at one point in the film and it was not a film that I felt very relaxed watching however that is not meant in a bad way but in a good one.
I'm not a massive fan of war films however this particular effort is slightly different in its approach, it follows the exploits of three bomb disposal experts who are operating in Iraq. Jeremy Renner plays Sergeant William James who is a risk taker which is not the sort of personality you would think is ideal when it comes to dealing with explosives but he does get results and is now paired up with a new team after they lost their previous leader. Alongside him is a complete opposite in the form of JT played by Anthon Mackie who is mor cautious and popular with his men and the third character is Own played by Brian Geharty who is the nervous one of the three with a real fear of death. The three are each facing the final days of their period in the front line and the film sort of counts down to that final day.
The only real downside to the film for me was the length as it is over two hours long and probably could have lost 20 minutes or so and still the overall effect would not have been lessened.
I must say that I found myself bonding and feeling sympathy with the characters and all of the three actors turned in convincing performances even if the characters they played were a bit predictable in the characteristics they displayed.
I certainly found this to be an entertaining fim that held my attention well for the majority of the two hours, it could have been improved a bit with some more rounded characters however it is a film I would definately recommend.
Summary: Good tense thriller
