Within 24 frames of The Incredibles, you realise why Pixar animation is fast becoming an entity more powerful than the Disney group with whom they originally aligned to help their distribution and merchandising. This is a film than brims with confidence and style from the outset unlike any other animated piece you have seen. Whilst DreamWorks present us with another Shrek and another fish tale, Pixar continues to show us the future of this genre.

Like all of Pixar’s hits, Finding Nemo, if I need name just one, The Incredibles revolves around a wonderfully simple and evocative story. In a world gone mad with litigation, superheroes are forced into retirement. We follow a married couple super duo as they struggle to come to terms with life without a mask through the drudgery of middle- agedom, baring kids also forced to suppress their own special powers.

What strikes you first about the film is the beautiful color pallet that draws from the muted tones of the 1950s detective show era. And we have not seen people represented so endearingly in CGI ever before; a kind of characterisation, yet not a hair or whisker is out of place. There is such depth of observation not only in the animation, but dripping from the script. Don’t we all know that sulky 13-year-old girl hiding behind her fringe? It’s such a brave movie to make because CGI people have previously always had to hide amongst animated donkeys because they somehow always seemed vacant-looking.

The film takes us on a non-stop ride of human emotion. Pride, envy, greed, love, despair. And it’s done with that Pixar genius that captivates both children and adults alike the whole way along. The numerous, epic superhero sequences are punctuated with tiny moments of human knowing that almost exceed the brilliance of the action itself.

You don’t need to know any more about The Incredibles. You know its credentials and you now know it lives up to the hype. You just need to go and see it. By the end of 158 minutes, you will be exhausted. The sheer energy of this film will swallow you whole. Your children of course, will be begging for more.

I prefer it when reviewers share their own experiences in first person, i.e. "I experienced this and that", rather than second-person predictions ("You will experience this and that") which always make me feel like I'm having my palms read in a fortune-teller's tent. :-).
