I saw this on Sky Movies on demand and I thought the plot sounded intriguing and like it would be of interest to me so I decided to give it a watch. This is a film only review.
The Yankee Pedlar Inn is closing down. The hotel is not bringing in any money and therefore the time has come for it to close. The owner is away in Barbados, leaving the hotel in the capable hands of Claire and Luke, two employees who are in their 20s.
It is clear to see that Luke and Claire get on well. The hotel is very quiet in its last few days and therefore the pair are left with not a lot to do. This gives them the perfect opportunity to continue with a project they have been working on together for some months. They are certain the hotel is haunted and are desperate to get evidence of this and find out more.
Will the pairs inquisitive nature do more harm than good?
I hadnt heard of this film before seeing it on Sky Movies which surprised me as it was quite a recent film. Therefore I didnt have huge expectations of the film but the plot did intrigue me and it sounded like a film I might enjoy.
I thought the scene was set really well in the opening of the film. The hotel was quiet and this therefore gave an eerie feel to the place which heightens the audiences senses to peculiar goings on. We also get to know Claire and Luke quite well in the opening scenes. Claire is your typical girl next door, she has short blonde hair and comes across as very innocent. Luke seems a nice enough guy although there was something about him that made me a little suspicious.
I thought the plot flowed well but it didnt captivate me like I thought it would. There was different aspects of the plot for me to focus on but I wasnt hooked to the storyline like I intially thought I would be. However, the film had a good pace and I did enjoy watching it.
The end was a bit confusing and there were points where I didnt really get what was going on. By this point I was just waiting for the film to finish to be honest.
The acting in the film is very good and I enjoyed watching the characters as they each had their own perspective on the hotel and it was interesting to hear these.
The film was released in 2011.
It was written and directed by Ti West.
It stars Sara Paxton and Pat Healy.
It runs for 101 minutes.
Not a film I would bother with again. Its ok for one watch but I didnt find it that interesting and I felt that it could have been so much better than it actually was. Ideally I would like to give the film 2.5 stars but I cant so I think a 2 star rating is more reflective of my opinion.
