Advantages: Great story, acting, writing, direction and editing. Beautifully shot.

Disadvantages: Lack of DVD extras

This is one of the finest noirs ever produced - an authentic piece from the genre's golden age. The story begins with the the murder of a man - a man we know nothing of but his name and where he works. In his last words he admits that he did a terrible thing, once. The detective role is fufilled by an unlikely position - an insurance claim investigator. A green handkerchief owned by the deceased triggers a memory from the investigator, prompting him to find out more...

...I will not reveal any more for the story, in its sheer complexity and twisting nature, would be ruined. But I must say this, the film's opening scene, the scene that preceeds the actual killing, is one of the finest examples of on-screen tension ever created. Every shot is held just long enough to make you want more. Like a raging dog being kept on a lead, the impending dread of its release fills the viewer and characters alike.

Summary: Worth it all for the opening scene alone...
