The L Word - The Complete Season 1 (DVD) ... Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Four years after the American version of Queer as Folk made gay men the focus, it was time for a little turnabout with The L Word (bad title, great show). Centering around a tight-knit group of lesbians in Los Angeles, this drama was far removed from its working-class male counterpart in both style and content. While the men of QAF enjoyed a fabulous if melodramatic life on the middle-class streets of Pittsburgh, the women of The L Word lived it up in sunny California, with gorgeous houses, glamorous careers, and sexy wardrobes. Ironically, though, The L Word adhered more to the everyday drama of ensemble shows like thirtysomething than the soap opera antics of QAF, and the results were surprisingly heartfelt and effective, appropriately stylish but never over the top. There was plenty of room for titillation, but creator Ilene Chaiken fashioned from the start a show centered on characters and not just sex, aiming for the heart rather than... well, other places. The L Word focused primarily on committed couple Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman), a former power-career duo who've decided to have a baby; however, artificial insemination and the changing dynamics of their relationship throw their previously happy existence off-kilter. Within their orbit are spunky journalist Alice (Leisha Hailey), sultry hairdresser Shane (Katherine Moenning), closeted pro tennis player Dana (Erin Daniels), and espresso bar owner Marina (Karina Lombard) who, in the show's most polarising storyline, bedded the seemingly straight Jenny (Mia Kirschner) and shook up her heterosexual world. Jenny's "am-I-straight-or-not?" kvetching frustrated both her fiancé (Eric Mabius) and many viewers, who were alternately irritated and intrigued by her inability to decide one way or the other. But Jenny's weakness was part of The L Word's strength: in exploring many sides of many issues, both domestic and political, it never came up with an easy answer for any of them, making the show all that more fascinating--and compulsively watchable. --Mark Englehart

... Kate Moennig. To explain the character in a few sentences is actually quite difficult, she's definitely complex. Shane is the character that all the girls want, and all the guys envy. She can have anyone she wants. She is a hairstylist to the rich and famous, and in this series (and quite a few others actually), she is portrayed as a bit of a player. In this series you don't really get to see why Shane acts the way she does, but later on in other series there are more pieces to the puzzle. She's definitely a...more

When The L word finally came to an end this year, I have to admit that I was one of the many fans that was a bit gutted! Okay, I'm not one of those crazy people that wears a T-shirt saying 'RIP The L Word' (that's a whole different review!), but I was dissapointed, it was a great show! First things first, anyone of any sexual orientation can enjoy The L Word. It's not against the law to watch it if you are heterosexual! Those that avoided watching because of the content really missed out on a great show! Anyway, back to the point. I watched the show regularly from the frist season to the last. I didn't want to download any of the shows illegally so I started collecting ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The best lesbian series ever (211 words)

I bought this series just on the fluke that it might be good, you had the likes of jennifier beales who was from flashdance, and erin daniels whos been in a few csi series. Plus loads of other great actresses. Anyway, i put it on, and to say i loved it is an understatement. The series is completely gripping, its all about a group of lesbian/ bisexual women and there lifes and relationships etc. What first hit me about this series was how realistic the acting was, you would think they were all gay. They also seem to get on well both on screen and in real life, which i really like and this comes across in the series. This season is left ...  Read the complete review

I was a late starter when it came to becoming a fan of this great Lesbian hit tv series! I was only introduced to the programme by some friends when the show was already well into season 3 but so many friends of mine loved it and if Im honest I only decided to watch it so I too could join in their conversations which could last hours at a time! I was hooked within minutes of watch the first episode of the first season. You are welcomed into the lifes of a group of Lesbian friends living and loving the LA lifestyle. The first series sees Jenny, a hetrosexual neighbour of Bette and Tina be converted to the girls way of thinking! Jenny originally moved into the ...  Read the complete review

Season one of The L word is the season that got me hooked. It is, however, not the best. We are introduced to this lesbian community through Jenny, a young woman who has just moved to L.A to be with her boyfriend, Tim. Through him she meets her neighbours, Tina and Bette, and their friends Marina, Dana, Alice, Kit and Shayne, a group of close friends and lesbians! Jenny immediately falls for Marina, and on rolls an entire season of lesbian drama. This series is out to make a name for itself, and it succeeded. There is lots of sex in this series, which, to be honest puts me off, and we have alot of work to do in terms of getting to know all of the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The L Word - The Complete Season 1 (DVD): Sex or no. (91 words)

The L Word is a series about a group of close-knit lesbians living in Los Angeles and their friends and family who either support or loathe them. This is a quirky look at the life of lesbians in LA, based heavily on relationships, sex, problems and the way to deal with sexual preferance. It shows how the world around them adjust and how they themselves adjust. With good humor, serious moments, passionate times and a gorgeous looking cast, you can't go wrong. Unless there's such a thing as too much ...  Read the complete review
