Introduction Much as I like to keep informed of what’s going on in the World Cup, I find it hard to watch a game the whole way through. So when I realised that The Land Girls was on Channel 4 at the same time as the match, I ended up watching that and just flicking every now and again to check on the score. Based on the novel by Angela Huth, the Land Girls is a film that I don’t remember making a particular splash when it was released back in 1998, yet it is a film that has always stuck in my mind for its quiet, non-vomit inducing, romance about a topic that is rarely captured in films – the land girls during the Second World War. Set during the second world war this is a nice little drama with some touching moments and is an enjoyable film to watch with some good solid performances. The film focuses on a group of female volunteers in The Womens Land Army who helped support the agricultural industry during the war when all the men wer off fighting. The war had a big impact on the recognition of womens potential role in the work place and their ability to do jobs formerly belived to be in the male domain. Cast List Catherine McCormack ... Such females were drafted into agricultural service to help sustain the food requirements of the nation in it's biggest crisis. The story and setting will gradually seduce and absorb the viewer, evoking the smells and sounds of rural English life with it's winning charm. The three girls, full of the joys of youth and emerging sexuality and discovery, focus their attentions on Joe, the man of the farm. He is not a remarkable man, and this is for a good reason that escapes ... Read the complete review

The Land Girls is ten years old and I have only finally got round to seeing it. The scary thing is I remember my girlfriend wanting to go to see it in the cinema and I said I would go with her, somehow managing to wangle out of it because I said it wasn't my thing. It's really easy to do. Just fake a cold while it is out in the cinema because, as a british movie (this is in the times before Harry Potter, of course) you were guaranteed that it was only going to be out for a few weeks. Anyway, upon watching it recently I cannot believe that I missed out - it was an amazingly heartfelt film about relationships and friendships through adversity - and some of the cast are ...
