I saw the very first episode of The Fast Show by accident. My wife had said something like “Oh, I’ve set the video up* to record a programme that you might like” (* We don’t have a five-year-old handy so we do this stuff ourselves.) On first viewing, I wasn’t sure if it was the worst or best thing I’d seen in ages. It was only when I saw the second episode, that I realised why the first was funny – the catch phrases in the formulaic sketches that were to repeat themselves, week in, week out.
