Advantages: Great new characters, Great old characters still, Hilarious
Disadvantages: Less easy to follow
The second series of the hit comedy the League of Gentlemen seems less episodic and more storyline-based, even though the previous year had the 'new road' plot, and individual story arcs for all characters. The series can essentially be summed up with: nosebleeds. The 'special stuff' meat sold by butcher Hilary Briss becomes the major player towards the end of this series, as it becomes the source of Royston Vasey's population's nosebleeds. Meanwhile, there are continuing storylines for the Denton family ("the lavatory ... into which we do not pass solids"), the Local Shopkeepers Tubbs and Edward ("we'll have no trouble here"), Pop, Legz Akimbo, Iris and Mrs. Levinson, and Dr. Chinnery the unlucky vet, among many others. New characters that are introduced and expanded on are Papa Lazarous ("wanna buy some pegs Dave?"), the Charity Shop women ("want a bag for that dear?"), the Major, played by Roy 'Chubby' Brown, Herr Lip and the unhappily married Charlie and Stella, and all are a treat. Slightly less enjoyable and accessible than the first series due to its continuing plot, League of Gentlemen can still be enjoyed whether you laugh at the character jokes, the uncomfortable or freakish situations, the gore or just the animal deaths (and there are plenty of them). However, if you're not a fan of bizarre, 'black' comedy and think you might find it offensive, it's likely you will, and you should avoid this. This DVD does contain all 6 episodes over 3 hours of the second series, and is well worth the money.

- 07/09/03 Welcome to dooyoo!
Sorry for the Somewhat Useful rating but apart from a brief overview of characters old and new this review doesn't tell us much else and certainly nothing about the DVD's which I would have liked to read about i.e. how many discs, episode breakdown, formats available and the all important extras, if there are any.

- 07/09/03 A classic series - the best character has to be Pop though: "go upstairs and get the kinder eggs"! |
