As previously mentioned in one of my reviews, I adore cartoons. I think that The Little Mermaid is Disney's masterpiece- after The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. In fact, I was surprised that Disney ventured into such thematic elements for an animated feature which is primarily aimed at children. I believe that this film must be among the most romantic ever- and the fact that the main female character rebels against her family to run away with her love, is according to me, one of the features that made this the most different and original Disney animated film. I think this is my favourite Disney movie ever as well as Beauty and the Beast, which I can't seem to find on dvd which is highly annoying! I remember being pretty obsessed with this when it came out on video and I am now 25 and still love it, and now own it on dvd. The Little Mermaid was released in 1989, the plot is as follows... Ariel is a 16 year old princess who also happens to be a mermaid, she is also very curious about humans. This is probably due to the fact that her father King Triton has told Ariel that contact between humans and merpeople is forbidden. I love all the old fashioned pre-pixar Disney movies, but there are few that hold quite as big a place in my heart as this, The Little Mermaid. In 1990, when this came out, I'd just started getting pocket money from my parents in return for doing household chores, and this video was the first thing I ever purchased with my own money.
