Renny Harlin has proved himself to be a great director by creating stunning movies such as Cliffhanger and Deep Blue Sea. The Long Kiss Goodnight is no exception. It is an action movie that is different which in a world of Hollywood blockbusters is very unusual. So what makes it different I hear you say, well first of all it has an absolutely brilliant plot but even more so there is a heart behind the characters rather than a flat action hero.
The plot revolves around Samantha Caine (Geena Davis) who is a teacher who suffers from Focal Retrograde Amnesia. Sorry I had to show off but basically she has lost her memory. Now she is a schoolteacher that employs detective Mitch Hennesey (Samuel L Jackson) to investigate her past. They discover she was called Charly Baltimore and she was a trained assassin and spy for the American government. Now her past has caught up with her and Charly slowly emerges to tackle an evil plan that can be traced to the US intelligence community. Excellent plot.
The acting is simply incredible and a huge amount of credit goes to Geena Davis. She basically plays two completely different characters, and plays them very well. Not only visually are the two personas different but also their mannerisms are different. First of all she does a brilliant job as the gentle schoolteacher. She appears like an average mother and acts genuinely surprised when she discovers something about her past. Then we turn to Charly. She plays her spot on. She makes appear like a cold-hearted killer, which I suppose, would be true of an assassin. Not only that but she handle guns and stunts scenes convincingly making it really entertaining. Samuel L Jackson is brilliant as the detective. He has the role of adding humour to a pretty serious film and he does a great job. He too looks great when covered in blood and clutching a gun or getting blown out of a hotel. You need to see it to understand. All the supporting cast is also superb and are really
convincing. The bad guys all appear evil and make it great when they meet their inevitable fate.
The action is superb and as I said Geena looks great in the stunts scenes whether it is shooting at a car while skating at great speed or jumping from a train station into ice. There are so many good scenes. The one thing that makes it stand out from your average film is the filming; every stunt is filmed from great angles making it feel like you are watching it for real. The special effects too are great making the movie overall a great one in every respect.
I highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasn’t seen it. I didn’t really hear much about it at the cinema but it should definitely be watched if possibly because it is brilliant entertainment.
