Advantages: too many to list
Disadvantages: numb bum
peter jackson definitely saved the best til last when he released the final part of the trilogy. having never really been a fan of fantasy film, i avoided watching the first two films in the cinemas and then, being unable to avoid the hype of the final part, rented the fellowship of the ring and i was hooked!
everything about this final part is just awe-inspiring. and this extended edition means the christopher lee gets put back in! and his final scenes, in my opinion, should have been in the cinema cut. speaking of this extended edition, there are some 40 minutes of extra/longer scenes taking the running time to nearly 4 hours! now a 4 hour film is hard going but you dont actually realize which scenes were not part of the original cut because everything just flows and merges together so well.
frodo does become progessively more annoying and so do the orcs, probably because they get even uglier in this part!
gandalf is as legendary as always and gimli as funny as ever.
the battle scene at minas tirith, as expected, out does the helms deep battle from the twin towers.
anway i thought i would just mention the extras as there are over 3 hours of them and they are really good! in particular is a docu on the world premiere in new zealand, filming of the wrap party, and my favourite - the filming of frodos last ever scene where peter jackson cant seem to say 'we've got it'. as if he doesnt want it to end. its quite emotional how at the end elijah and peter embrace as they reaize that its all over. then there is some behind the scenes stuff at the oscars. the extras are like a docu-film in themselves so get great value for money if you get this extended dvd.
as most of you have already seen this film, its worthy trying to get hold of this particular extended version if you are interested in the behind the scenes and making of stuff.
Summary: this extended version manages to out do the theatrical release
