Quite a Dismay for me... (The Love Guru (DVD))

I had really looked forward to watching this film, especially after some rave reviews that I heard about The Love Guru. But I have to say that this film was really not for me, I practically hated it from start to end. I do know that many viewers did appreciate this film, but it was really not up to my expectations. The movie was classified as "romantic comedy" in some websites but there was really not a single dose of my definition of romance in The Love Guru. In addition, I personally found the jokes really weak and sometimes downright insulting. The really gross scenes also did nothing to enhance my appreciation of the movie.


PLOT:

The young Guru Pitka is an American Guru who has lived in India for nearly all of his life. He is quite popular for his conferences and famous inspiring talks on lifestyle habits. Thanks to his increasing popularity, the Guru Pitka literally lives in the lap of wealth and has servants who are ready to fulfill his every wish at the snap of a finger. When he is called to the States in order to inspire a rather depressed sports champion, the Guru Pitka sees it as an opportunity to finally overthrow his lifetime rival, the popular Deepak Chopra. In addition, the Guru Pitka has also been fitted with a chastity belt during his adolescence under the condition that he will be able to remove it once he meets his one true love. Will Guru Pitka manage to accomplish his numerous endeavors?


For starters, I think that the plot itself was quite weak and I fully expected the acting to make up for such a plot. However, I was even more disappointed by the acting and line deliveries in the film. Amongst the numerous attempts at humoristic dialogues, that I personally found rather watery, there were a couple of precious few genuinely funny lines, but I was extremely disappointed by the way that they got messed up with some really amateurish acting. It is even more disappointing because it is so obvious that a few members of the cast, such as Jessica Alba have some real potential for acting but their roles were too limited to really help them into developing their potentials.


I was also not at all fond and/or at ease with the pace of the film as a whole- it was much too slow over some unnecessary bits and there were too many details that seemed to be stuffed in a single scene. I am not overly fond of films with really gross humor and I was unfortunate enough to be faced with more than one really horrifying jokes in the various scenes.


It was really gruesome for me to sit down and watch these such scenes- and I only stuck till the end because of the persistence of my friends! I was also quite curious to see what type of ending would this film have and I was equally disappointed by the bleak ending: Everything was extremely predicable and a few minutes into the movie was more than enough for us to guess the ending.


The only times when I laughed in the film was when the lead actor pronounced his own name: "I am the Guru Pitka". I think that this was the only line that managed to impress me in terms of humor because I really loved the way and style with which he introudeced himself to everyone.

While I will not describe the bonus features as particularly entertaining, I think that it is worth a look, it can be quite interesting to those who enjoyed the movie. There is unfortunately no commentary track in my DVD.


Overall, while this might appeal to some viewers, it was sadly not one for me, hence not a movie that I will recommend.
