I really enjoyed reading the book of this film by Alice Sebold so I couldn't wait to watch the film adaptation of it.

For those who haven't read the book, the story is about a 14 year old girl, Susie Salmon, who is viciously murdered by her own neighbour. After her death, from an in-between land somewhere between Heaven and Earth, Susie watches over her family who struggle to deal with her disappearance and also over her killer who remains on her street living right next to the family who he's torn apart.

Although it was a little silly, I did like the idea of the in-between land which was basically anything that Susie wanted it to be. She imagined mountains, waterfalls, cornfields, forests and she got to play and live in her own world however she wanted to. This gave the film a fantasy aspect and it made it quite magical to watch - one minute Susie would be strolling through a dark forest and the next minute she'd be rolling down a hill covered in snow.

All of the acting was brilliant and every time Susie's family became upset by her disappearance and apparent death, I'd get upset to as it was very sad to watch two parents dealing with and accepting the death of their eldest child. Susan Sarandon, who played Susie's grandmother, brought some comedy to the film with her huge bouffant hair style and continual chain-smoking and drinking alcohol as if it was medicine.

Stanley Tucci who plays Susie killer was great. I've seen him in other films and liked him but I hated him in this and grimaced every time he came on screen which shows how well he played a perverted and nasty man.

I've not seen Saoirse Ronan in anything else before but I thought this was a great part for her. The way she played her part couldn't help but make you smile as she was just so smiley and sweet and so it was even more upsetting when she was harmed.

I thought this was very much like the book and included both light and dark and happy and sad moments. Even though it did make me cry, I did really enjoy this film and I think it's a must see for any fans of this type of film - moving and emotional.

Summary: A great film
