The Majestic (DVD) ... 30 September, 2002 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Like Frank Darabont's other movies, The Majestic attempts, and sometimes achieves, the sheer decency of classic American movies. A cross between The Music Man and The Return of Martin Guerre, it is the film about McCarthyism that Frank Capra might have made if he had not drifted to the populist Right. An amnesiac screen-writer (Jim Carrey) is mistaken for a missing war-hero and becomes the force that reinvigorates a town distraught over its dead young men. The film is so caught up in a pastel-coloured elegiac celebration of small-town life that it at times loses pace altogether and not even Jim Carrey can quite pull it back up to its natural speed. On the other hand, his underplaying of the climactic confrontation with the House Un-American Affairs Committee--his career is at risk because he once followed a girlfriend to a political meeting--is admirable; we believe in his conversion from cynicism to heroism because he is even quieter than Jimmy Stewart in Mister Smith Goes to Washington mode. Martin Landau is a little too lovable as the grieving father who persuades Carrey of his identity, Laurie Holden not quite convincing as the woman for whom he falls. On the DVD: The Majestic on disc is presented in 1.85:1 visual aspect ratio with crisp, clear visuals that sometimes make us gasp at the complex realism of the period details and has an attractive Dolby 5.1 stereo acoustic. Extras include some deleted scenes, the trailer and an extended sequence from Sand Pirates of the Sahara, the witty B-movie pastiche that crops up at a couple of important moments in the plot. --Roz Kaveney

... follows the life of B movie writer Peter Appleton. He is accused by the witch hunts and suspended by the studio. One night he gets drunk, goes for a drive and crashes his car into the local river. He washes up on a beach with amnesia and is mistaken by the townspeople for a local resident previously thought to have been killed in the second world war. I will not spoil the plot anymore but a very moving, nostalgic, beautifully written story ensues. Like previous Frank Darabont films the story takes time to get going a...more

Premium Review The Majestic (DVD): A Majestic Tale (652 words)
by - written on 12/12/03 (Very useful, 16 readings)
Rating:

You may be forgiven for never hearing of a film called The Majestic starring Jim Carrey. It was released in the US just before Christmas in 2001, just around the time that the first Lord of the Rings movie was going strong. Mixed reviews and a heavy marketplace meant that the movie didn?t even make half its budget back. As a result it barely got a release in the UK, a strange occurrence for a Carrey movie but then this was Carrey being serious and out of his three attempts only The Truman Show was a big hit. The film is set in 1951 at the time of the communist witch hunts. Screenwriter Peter Appleton (Carrey) is blacklisted due to a group he attended in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A good old fashioned film. (729 words)

Next time your loved one suggests a nice quiet night in, with a bottle (or two) of wine and a nice, not too demanding film, then may I suggest The Majestic, starring Jim Carey. Now right away I can hear lots of you screaming at me "Nooooooo Jimblob! we hate Jim Carey!" Well, it's ok to hate Jim Carey, if hating anyone is what you are into, but I ask you to suspend your hatred for the rubber faced comedian, and instead watch this film without any pre-conceived prejudice. The Majestic (2001) is a total diversion on JC?s usual fare of slapstick tomfoolery, for one it is a period piece, set in the early fifties and for another it is not a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Majestic (DVD): A good, charming film (295 words)

This is another good quality serious role for Jim carrey, and as I have commented when reviewing The truman Show, I feel that he is far better in these roles than in his comedy ones. This film, like the Shawshank redemption and The Green Mile is directed by the very talented Frank Darabont. Although in my opinion is not as good as those films, espeically shawshank. This film is set at the time of the communist witch hunts in Hollywood, and follows the life of B movie writer Peter Appleton. He is accused by the witch hunts and suspended by the studio. Premium Review Just another Jim Carrey film? (382 words)

Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is a film writer who suddenly finds his life falling apart simply for attending a Communist meeting - although this was years ago. He loses his job, his girl, and his respect. He gets depressed, goes for a drive and crashes his car into a river. He is found later battered, but alive by an old man and his dog. The old man takes pity on him, and takes him back to the town where evreyone seems to recognise him, although he has lost his memory and hasn't a clue what is going on. The owner of the once prosperous cinema (The Majestic), believes he is his long lost son, who dissappeared in the war, and takes him back. All the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The Majestic (DVD): Clichéd, but pleasant enough! (142 words)

Don't expect any twists or surprises in this one. Memory loss, big bad government stomping on individualism, outsider taken into the bosom of the community, falls in love with girl next door......nothing you haven't seen before. And the transformation of the Majestic Cinema from crumbling dump into revamped splendour would have the Changing Rooms squad stunned in disbelief. Jim Carrey is in Truman-mode again here...the man CAN act but that damned toothy smile just reminds you that this guy is also Ace Ventura!! Don't get me wrong - I quite enjoyed the film, but it falls in the category of light entertainment. If you're not looking to be ...  Read the complete review
