I watched this movie last night, it was the first time I have seen it since the early seventies when it was a staple of the BBCs regular John Wayne seasons. Of course the BBC has long since given up on John Wayne film seasons, or indeed films by any other artist of note. The plot involves a lawyer, played by James Stewart, killing the local hoodlum, Liberty Valance, in a gunfight and making himself a local hero. He goes on to be a Senator, he gets the girl and has a successful career. The twist is that Valance was actually killed by the John Wayne character ,Tom Donovan, who goes on to lose the girl (Vera Miles) to Rance ... Read the complete review

(film only review) Who watches Westerns? Nowadays hardly anybody, the genre is as passé as the historical period in which it is set. First came the original Westerns most of which follow a fixed pattern and aren‘t too interested in historical truth, then came the parodies, the so-called Spaghetti Westerns from Italy, and now only occasionally a director uses the ingredients to tell a story like Kevin Kostner does in Dances with Wolves. Why would I watch an oldie from 1962, what’s more, one in ugly black and white? THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE. A masterpiece for some, an overlong and unrewarding Western for others. I remember as a child watching “Liberty Valance” on my parents black & white TV. I enjoyed it and watched it again many years later on a colour TV. It was still in black and white. The movie was directed by John Ford in 1962 and tells the story of a very good guy (James Stewart) who plays a young (I don’t think so) lawyer who is badly beaten up by a very bad guy (Lee Marvin). A good guy (John Wayne) comes across the unconscious Stewart, brings him back to town and drops him off at the local Cafe. A very nice waitress (Vera Miles) ... Read the complete review
