There’s no Beatles music on the soundtrack, predictably enough, but there are a lot of songs by the actual Manson Family, which are terrible in an entertaining kind of way. Fifteen years in the making, and finally released in 2003, this film is a rather grim re-telling of the Manson Family murders of 1969. Directed by Jim VanBebber, the film achieved near-legendary status among fans of ‘alternative’ and ‘extreme’ horror cinema. A rough cut was shown under the title ‘Charlie’s Family’ in 1997, and this complete version is, as far as I can tell, the same as the earlier version, but with better sound and picture quality. It’s very much a film of two halves. The Sixties scenes, in which Manson and his gang of killer hippies drop out, take drugs, hump each other and murder people, are very impressive.
