If you haven't seen this yet you're missing out on one of the best pieces of original film of the past few years. Coming from the house of the Wachowski brothers, this beautifully detailed movie tells the story of a bleak future where machine takes over from man (okay, so it's not *that* original, give me a break here) and decides to use us all as human batteries to power themselves. Interesting idea huh? The secret to this simple idea, the thing that makes it into a brilliant story is the fact that the machines create an artificial world, called "The Matrix" in which humans go about their daily lives blissfully unaware of what they're being used for. Only one man can stop them (woah, another new idea! hehe) and this man is Neo, (Keanu Reeves) a brilliant hacker who is "freed" from the Matrix by Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne) and tought what is really going on in the world. Neo is special because he is able to manipulate the Matrix and make things behave the way he wants them to behave, with this special power, he is able to help free mankind from its terrible prison. Not only does this film have a great story, it is also backed up by some of the most stunning special effects ever seen and some blisteringly quick martial arts scenes. This is a must see film and as long as you get the region 1 dvd, you won't be disapointed (the extra features are better, a couple of extra "cut" scenes, a commentry from the W Brothers) - the picture and sound quality are superb, and so is the sound track - you should really try and watch this film turned up loud with a decent surround sound system, it's the nuts! PS. This is the beginning of a series of films, so if you haven't seen it yet, check it out soon before the others arrive and you get left behind!

- 10/04/01 Have to say that I really enjoyed this film and was actually impressed with Keanu Reeves acting as he has had quite a few films recently with poor acting. |
