Advantages: Fast paced, humourous, action packed
Disadvantages: They may try a third episode
Well once again the movie world decides that they will run off the back of a sucessful film and creat a sequal. How was it???? Good, not great but kept you there for the duration. I have seen the first one and I think that the second one did well by using a majority of the same characters without making the concept too complicated. Teh story flows along easily and you do not have to think too hard about what is going on ( a relief for me that late at night). The story has traits of Indiana Jones and the movies of the golden age. Regular battles with the Mummys are finished with the two lead characters embracing and looking into each others eyes, like gone with the wind. Immidiately broken with the son and uncle rolling there eyes and wanting to get on with it. The special effects are great and you know if you have seen the first one that the action is going to be coming thick and fast. The mummy returns does not disappoint on this front. The battles run from country to country, character to character with the good guys winning of course. But then this film is meant to be light hearted with all the action of a John Woo film (almost). The humour is covered by jokes and slap stick capers sometimes being slipped in when you wouldnt expect it and does keep the smirk on the face. If you havent seen the first one, DONT WORRY. Although 99.9% of the characters are the same and there are a couple of references to the original they do not spoil this film and it is a pleasurable view. Some of the references are well scripted to draw you into watching the first one or reminding you of situations if you have already seen it. The computer generated graphics really do inspire the imagination, whether it be for the scarab beetles or the Scorpion Kings army, making it very difficult for the stars to act I would have thought. One thing that did surprise me was the film being billed as a horror when there is a distinct lac
k of gore. There are plenty of dead bodies and sand being cut up, but it is a bit like the a-team (although they dont all come out of it without a scratch). Classing this as an action film may have got more people to the movies, although I know that the viewing figures are very high anyway. All in all it is a good film and one of those that is important to see on a big screen, so unless your tv is the size of a small house get to your local cinema and check it out.

- 08/06/01 There is some shock tactic so you may well jump a bit, but it definitely not a blood and gore epic. Hope you enjoy it. |
