Advantages: funny, great special effects
Disadvantages: need to have seen the first movie
We were NOT disappointed in the sequel to The Mummy!! There was more action in this one than in the first one and I still think these movies have a real Indiana Jones feel. That’s why I love them so much. We did wish we had seen the first one again before we went to see this so it might be helpful to do this. The characters are the same. The difference is it is about 9 years later and they are married, with a son named Alex, and living in London in a ‘not too shabby’ mansion. But when the movie opens they are on yet another ‘dig’, as they call it. They have their son with them, who is a little mischievious, to say the least. He is also very knowledgeable as he often accompanies his Mother, Evie, to work at the museum. Evie has been having dreams lately, involving a Scorpion King who lived thousands of years ago. It also happens to be the Egyptian New Year. Hence, here they are in Egypt, looking for anything to prove that this Scorpion King lived and really existed. The legend is that he tried to rule Egypt, was overcome, and after his warriors all perished in the desert, he offered his soul to Inubus, the scorpion god, in exchange for victory over his enemies. After going back and overcoming his enemies in battle, the scorpion king is forced by Inusbus to serve him forever. Sounds like a demon of Satan’s, doesn’t it?! But all of his scorpion warriors, who look more like greyhounds standing upright, had to go back into the desert to rest for the next 5,000 years. When Evie and her husband Rick (Brandon Fraisier) find the tomb where he is buried, she has another vision and opens the door where the golden box is that holds the scorpion bracelet. This starts a chain reaction, which is the first step to waking up the scorpion king. There is an earthquake and they barely escape the pyramid with their lives. After taking the scorpion bracelet home, they are soon followed by evil men who need the bracel
et to awaken the Mummy, Ihmotep, so that he can fight the scorpion king as he is the only one who is powerful enough to stop him. But enough about the plot of the movie. If you saw the first one, you get the gist. The real purpose of the movie is action, drama and GREAT graphics and special effects! And boy do we have a lot of them!! There are chases, gun fights, sword fights. A bus chase, in particular, is super suspenseful as it involves the guardian mummies of Ihmotep. If you saw the first movie, these guys are MEAN! And fast! And this involves crawling on the side of buildings at great speeds. But they manage to get away as usual, only to have their son kidnapped and taken back to Egypt. So they are off to the land of the scorpion king to find their son and stop him from overtaking the world. This movie has a lot in it that I’m not comfortable with. I don’t believe in reincarnation. And I certainly don’t believe in real mummies. But, like I said, I loved the Indiana Jones movies and this is the closest to those that any movies since have come. Brandon Frasier is great as the adventurer, Rick O’Connel. And Rachel Weicz is as British and cute as ever as his wife, Evie. This little guy who played Alex was great, too. Okay, so a kid his age should have been more scared!! So what! He IS the son of a reincarnated Egyptian Princess and in this film his father, Frasier, is revealed to be a magi, guardian of people, sent by God. We also have ‘Izzie’ back, the crazy pilot from the first film. But this time he has a ‘magic carpet’ so to speak. A hot air flying machine for lack of a better description. Their flight to Egypt is a beautiful sight among the stars with one scene, in particular, a silhouette against the moon just gorgeous. There’s also a lot of comedy in this one. Add man-eating beetles, poisonous snakes, pygmy mummies with shark-like teeth AND that vixen girl
friend of Ihmotep’s is back. What’s her name, Ancksunamun? Yes, the Mummy finally resurrects her and it turns out that her and Evie knew each other in Egypt thousands of years ago. Oh, and the good guy in the black robe is back!! The Magi guardian. He’s the one who first realizes that Rick is also destined to be a magi. He’s a great actor and I think would make a great Jesus in a religious film. We thoroughly enjoyed The Mummy Returns. Great entertainment, great action, great graphics. Who could ask for more? See it. Have fun!!
