Advantages: none
Disadvantages: Cliched, no plot, no chemistry between the characters and humourless tripe
I loved the first two films in this series mainly because I loved the interaction between the two main characters Evie and Rick. It was not till I started watching this film that I realised that they had replaced Rachel Weisz with some other woman (Rachel probably saw the script and declined - clever girl.) Maria Bello (who the hell is she!!). I was gutted. This film was a major disappointment.
The story is that Rick and Evies marriage is a little lack lustre (just like the film) and she has taken to being a bit of a sufragette. Their son is grown up and is now working on a dig in China where he unearths the Dragon God. The O'connells take a precious diamond to china on behalf of the British Government were they are betrayed by their friend and employer of their son, Professor Roger Wilson. From here on a tedious journey to find the famed Shangri La takes place in bid to stop the Dragon God destroying the world and... Well who cares. This is cliched and predictable, almost as if it was done just to produce a series of computer games.
The first film was absolutley brilliant with the mix of action, adventure, comedy and romance just right. The second was excellent, not quite as good as the first, but still very good. If anything the effects and set pieces took over a little in the second and overshadowed the story. This third film is just trite, tired and lack lustre. The storyline is non existant and the two main characters do not work together. Evie is just not Evie anymore and what has happened to Brendan Fraser, he has just gone downright wierd looking and unfortunately John Hanna who was wonderfully funny in the first two looked like he had just phoned his performance in. I almost switched off half way throught, but decided to give it to the end. The only performances that I did enjoy were those of Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, who are such good actors that I don't think it is in them to give a bad performance. However they could not save this dour humourless dirge of a film that I will not even bother to buy.
If I could I would give this no stars, but that is not possible so I will have to give it one and that is for the performances by Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. The others can all be sacrificed to the Dragon God for all I care. This was a sequal too far. If you loved the first two films, then trust me do not bother to watch this. It is truely dire.
Summary: They really should not have bothered with this sequal, it is dire.
