Advantages: Watching John Hannah in this will raise a smile.
Disadvantages: Not as good as previous mummy films
This is the third in the series of "Mummy" movies starting Brendan Fraser. The best way of enjoying this film is to look at it as a film on its own. Sadly by comparing it to previous mummy movies only leads to disappointment.
Brendan Fraser reprises the role of Rick O 'Connell well, even though the character seems very out of place and lost in the first third of the film. John Hannah also returns as Johnathan, Rick's brother in law. I must admit Johnathan steals the show with his one liners like ' You guys are like mummy magnets'. The comedy turn with Rick and Johnathan on the firework's truck is the best part of the movie. I don't want to spoil the movie so I won't go into details, but just watch out for it.
Sadly Rachel Weiz did not return for this movie so Maria Bello replaced her. No disrespect to Maria, but the script tended to turn Evelyn into a Barbara Cartland character rather than the woman mad about Egypt we saw in the previous two movies. It was as if Rick was married to another character.
Their son has grown up since the mummy returns and is now uncovering tombs on his own. Again so i don't spoil the movie i won't go into details but Alex bumps into his mum and dad at Johnathan's club then things start to happen.
The good news is the special effects and the scenery is as great as ever. The costumes are suberb with attention to detail clearly paid.
In summary, viewed on its own its a good film. However, viewed as a sequel to the mummy and the mummy returns sadly it falls a long way short.
Summary: Good on its own, but a poor sequel

- 06/10/09 They should not have made this without Weisz. I think Fraser and Hannah looked depressed all throughout the film as well like they didn't want to be there. Not going to be watching this one again. Brill review. Kirsty x |
