Advantages: The muppets, funny, festive
Disadvantages: songs get stuck in your head!
The muppets are just cool right? Well I reckon so. I've always been a great big fan and of course I saw this film when it was out at the cinema in 1992. (that long ago? Ouch!)
Of course we all know the classic Charles Dickens tale of Scrooge and the visit of the three spirits and his sudden change of heart. We adore the story and there are lots and lots of film adaptations with this story as their theme.
Now take a classic story and add the Muppets into it and you make a thing of Joy and laughter indeed. Kermit is Bob Cratchit and Miss Piggy his, well, piggy wife.
Gonzo himself takes on the role of Charles Dickens, the narrator with his food obsesed assistant Rizzo the rat. The narration is truly a joy and some of the funnies scenes happen between Gonzo and Rizzo -nothing new there then.
Michael Caine is Scrooge and he plays him ever so well. He really seems to get into the role and really fits in with the zany world of the muppets.
Other Muppet regulars make appearances, Even the Swedish Chef gets in there! New muppets are introduced too. The Ghosts are all new and I adore the Ghost of Christmas present, A big jolly Santa type giant with flaming red hair and a memory problem.
The real beauty of this film is in it's musical score. It has some real crackers and I find myself singing "After all theres only one more sleep till christmas" alot myself.
The humour is magically muppetly, the animation and filming just amazing. It all slots together so very well and I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to get all those crazy muppets to behave and actually say their lines!
This film is dedicated to Jim Henson and is the first his son worked upon in his stead. It is a classic addition to the muppet world and no christmas is complete without it.
Pick up a copy at amazon for £6.97 on brand new VHS or from £3 used. Copies on Ebay go for a couple of quid and you can pick up a DVD for not much more.
All families will love this film, little kids and big kids all. You can watch and enjoy all the little jokes and often missed subtleties because you don't have to concerntrate on the much loved and known storyline.
Of course this Film is suitable for all, but the ghost of Christmas Present and the Marley Brothers (yes the two of them -the two hecklers in fact) are a little scary so little ones should be supervised at least on the first time of watching to check they're not too freaked out by it all.
All together now..
"It's time to play the music
It's time to light the lights
It's time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show tonight"

- 09/12/04 Nice review. I must be the only person in the world who finds the Muppets rather tiresome rather than funny. :-)
