The Natural (DVD) ... released 28 May, 2001 at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Director Barry Levinson treats The Natural as a kind of shrine to America's national pastime, baseball, complete with all the possible mythic resonance that can be gleaned from the subject. Fans of the Bernard Malamud novel may be dismayed, but anyone who fell for the similarly mythic Field of Dreams will be hooked. Levinson displays an unabashed devotion to the game, although the film could use more of the realities of chewing tobacco and pine tar. The story opens as a young man (Robert Redford, in soft lighting) emerges from the sun-dappled heartland as maybe the best baseball player anybody's ever seen. On his way to the majors, he is waylaid by an enigmatic black widow (Barbara Hershey) and vanishes for many years. When he re-emerges, a silent mystery, he lands a spot with a New York team and begins tearing up the league--he's still the natural. Redford is fine, and Kim Basinger and Oscar-nominated Glenn Close are effective as the women in his life. The crowning touch is the soaring, extraordinary music by Randy Newman, the singer-songwriter turned orchestral composer. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com

... immediately obvious, all credit should be given to Robert Redford for miraculously managing to pull this off without too much trouble and to the director for filming Redford in a good light! This is a really good performance by Redford, who is utterly convincing as a man determined to follow his dream and achieve his goal. He manages to play the role with a hint of mystery, which is perfect for the film, which at times seems more like a fairytale than anything else. I am surprised that the director picked Redford ...more

Premium Review Excalibur was actually a Baseball bat. (906 words)

Robert Redford stars in "The Natural" and as I couldn't find it in the Movie section, I've placed it here amongst the Suggested Items. Young Roy Hobbs has a gift, he’s a natural but his Father tells him “You must develop it and if you rely too much on your gift, you’ll fail.” Roy has a rare talent for playing Baseball (Don’t let that put you off, there’s far more to this story than a bat and a ball.) His Dad drops dead (It looked like a heart attack from where I was watching it from) next to a big old tree and later that night, the tree is struck by lightening. Roy takes an axe to the stricken tree and ...  Read the complete review
