Advantages: Gripping, and fun
Disadvantages: not for little ones!
Twas the night before christmas, and all over the house, not a creature was sirring, not even a mouse. A mouse, a woman made from off cuts, the boogie man, and the pumpkin king.
Jack Skellington, is the triumphant ruler of Halloween town, but he grows weary. Sick and tired of the same old scares, year in year out, he is seeking new thrills. What might it be like to become the celebrated champion of christmas too?
So, Jack goes out and tries to create the perfect christmas. However, being a pretty scary character, he gets muddled, and befuddled. He has very strange views on what Christmas should be like. Presents, and decorations are scary, and unusual. It seems, that his attempt to capture Chrismas for his own, puts the real Santa at risk. How will it end? Can Jack save Christmas?
This film is rated PG, and is pretty harmless stuff. However, it is creepy. I would suggest that you think twice before letting your kids watch. My nine year old was fine, but my five year old was not. The odd, quirky little halloween characters are eerie. Some of the things that happen in the film, can be disturbing to say the least.
I loved the film. The stop motion is fantastic, and the action moves seamlessly. It flows beautifully, and works very well with the eloquent dialogue. The action is quick enough to keep you busy, and the main characters are individual enough to keep your interest. I personally love Jack skellington, and have a few of the little figures that you can buy to do with the film.
It has been on tv regularly, but can be bought on DVD for next to nothing. I got my copy for four pounds in tesco. The only thing that I would say, is that these cheap versions have no extra features. Nothing on there, but for the film itself and a few subtitle options.
Tim Burton has created a classic here. He is known to be very dark, and wierd to a certain extent. That continues to some extent here, but he does not alienate his audience, as he includes enough humour to balance the scary. This really is a great film, and will certainly keep you entertained. It is harmless fun, but I would suggest a watch through by yourself first, before you let your own little terrors watch!
Reccomended. G
Summary: A cult classic, and a great watch.
