Advantages: Great intensity
Disadvantages: Too chilling
Roman Polanski directs this creepy, supernatural, mystery thriller, The Ninth Gate.
Johnny Depp plays Dean Corso. Corso is a book dealer living in New York. He is hired to get copies of a book called, 'The nine gates of the Kingdom of Shadows', a book that the Devil was involved with. Corso is gripped by this mission and starts to struggle with evil. He gets involved with a demonic girl to help on his quest and finds there are others pursuing the book as well. He finds out that the book could open the gates to hell with murder and other vicious crimes commited along the way. The journey ends in a last man/woman standing battle in France.
Polanski's influence on the film is evident. It is very dark and the intensity of the film is there for everyone to see. It's mostly set in Estern Europe so there is great use of erie buildings and dark scenery.
Depp is fantastic as the mysteriously conflicted Dean Corso. He excels at being taken over by evil and the conflicts between good and evil. The support characters including Frank Langella and James Russo provide good support.
The film could have done with a few lighter moments along the way although that may have meant losing the chilling factor that grips the movie.
The DVD extras include a commentary with Polanski, trailer, featurette and cast and crew information.
The Ninth Gate is a great chilling movie.
Summary: The Ninth Gate will take you to Hell and back!
