Advantages: Great acting, Best Twist ever!!!!

Disadvantages: Slow burner

I really wanted to write a review of this film because although it has received average/good reviews i feel it is something of a modern classic. The film builds an atmosphere so chilling and creepy through a brilliantly composed minimalistic score and well acted roles that the 12 certificate it carries seems quite inappropriate.

The film is set towards the end of the second world war in the barely populated island of Jersey, the stately mannor it focuses on is shrouded by a misty forest with the nearest neighbors miles off and never seen nor heard. If thats not enough to have you shaking in your boots the children who live in the house are fatally alergic to light and are destined to live out their days stuck in this scary house with the curtains forever drawn. The bible bashing mother is played excellently by Ncole Kidman in a performance that really shows off her acting ability to the full, she is a traditionaly strict women who's paranoia of her children dying is slowly driving her insane as she waits for her husband to return from the war.

When 3 strangers show up the the door in answer to an advert for housekeepers that they never put out things start to hot up, as you try to work out exactly what it is about these characters that is freaking you out when they appear to be so nice. If you get involved in the guessing game like i did youll love all this but some may be left a little confused.

What really makes this film is the quality of the acting right down to the youngest members of the cast Alakina Mann and James Bentley who play the charmingly naive and ghostly pale children. A great performance also comes from veteren actress Fionnola Flanagan as the motherly house keeper with a grave secret.

The DVD extras of which there are plenty wont leave you wanting. My personal favourite was their slightly odd choice for an extra feature, a documentary about the childrens condition (Xeroderma Pigmentosum)which gives you a fuller understanding of some of the themes running deeply through this film. Other extras include: Audio Commentary From The Director, Inside The Others Featurette, Visual Effects and a
Directors Interview.

Beware!!! This film is a slow burner, perhaps not for the easily bored but if you stick with it you are sure to reap all the rewards from this amazing movie. The last half an hour is an edge of the seat affair as your mind races to catch the twists and turns of the plot and try to work out the ending. There is as you would hope a monumental twist at the end, fit for any classic horror or thriller, that leaves you feeling giddy, excited, shocked and horrorfied, you know, all the things you want to be feeling at the end of chiller such as this!!!

I bought this film from Ebay for a knockdown price of around £5 but if you cant be bothered to wait for an auction to finish its quite a well known film and should be available from all good DVD retailers for about £10. on amazon its £8 as theres 60 percent off at the momment.

Thanx for reading...........................................

Summary: Chilling tale with twists and turns galore!!
