The first half of the film is actually quite unmemorable.

It begins with the crew of the fishing boat, the ‘Andrea Gail’, returning home to Gloucester, the quaint fishing village on the coast of America, to be reunited with friends, parents, lovers and children, only to leave, two days later.

Most just need the money, and all are looking forward to wonderful prospects on their return, be it new relationships, marriage or spending more time with their children.

From the moment they’re on the water, there is onboard and there are problems from the beginning (men overboard, man eating sharks getting a little too close for comfort, etc).

Meanwhile, back home scientists are discussing the possibility that 3 tropical storms could collide to create the ‘perfect storm’. And can’t you just guess where the Andrea Gail is headed!

The captain of the ship, Billy (George Cloony, looking ruggishly hansom) knows there is a bad storm in their path but he suggests they try to make it back home anyway, either that, or not attempt it all and risk spoiling the fish and getting no pay.

As well as following the fishing boat, the film focuses on a coastal rescue team also out in the storm, who are experiencing a few problems of their own and frequently comes back to the friends and family waiting anxiously for news in the tavern back home.

It is not for 90 minutes that the action picks up when the storm hits. But the film follows a series of thrilling events from this point onwards, each one more visually stunning than the last. The effects and soundtrack accompanying (by James Horner – Titanic) these moments are both superb.

Unfortunately, it is when the action starts, that the plot (which was good up until this point) begins to deteriorate.

The ending to the film is particularly moving and although it has it’s faults, the film definitely exceeded expectation

Sorry about the low rating but you seem to have retold the plot. It would be more useful to know how you felt about the film. What were your reactions and thoughts?
