Occasionally a film comes along that does not fit into any of the boxes we like films to fit into. Frequently these films are dire, bursting at the seams with their own sense of self-importance, tedium being passed off as art. Sometimes, however, you find something special. For me, The Prophecy fits into this category. At the time of writing, a series called Apparitions on the BBC tells the story of the tangible conflict between God and Satan on Earth. It is a clever and frightening program which I immediately compared favourably to the ideas in The Prophecy. And here we are. The Prophecy, released in 1995, tells the story of a war in heaven ... "Did you ever notice how in the Bible whenever God needed to punish someone or make an example of someone or needed a killing he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like?" I like Christopher Walken. He's just one of those actors that captures my imagination. It comes as no surprise to read that he used to be a dancer and apparently his trademark is to work a dance into any movie he makes. He has grace and poise and that extraordinary ability to send shivers of fear up your spine. He's intense without being ham, deep without being dreary, funny in the darkest of ways. It is perhaps for all these things he was ... Read the complete review

Christopher Walken has a very busy few years in the early 1990s, releasing no fewer than six movies in 1995 alone, of which five saw him doing what he does best - playing the villain. One of those movies, as you have no doubt guessed by now, was The Prophecy, written and directed by Gregory Widen (The Highlander, Backdraft), and though filmed on a modest budget, is one of the most entertaining black comedy/horror movies in recent years. War in Heaven provides the plot, with the Archangel Gabriel (Christopher Walken) leading half of Heaven's Angels against the other (loyal) half in a war that has killed millions and millions on Angels both sides, with ... I first saw this film many years ago and have had to put up with watching it on an old crackly video tape. Mainly worn out to the amount of times I have watched it, as it is one of my favourite films. Imagine my delight when I saw this in the bargain basement of CD-Wow for less than £8. You of course can guess that I ordered it immediately and watched it as soon as it arrived . Why is the film so good in my mind.. Well it is basically the story, the way the characters are played and of course it has Viggo Mortensen playing the devil :oP The Story ********* (You may want to look away now incase I give too much away or its too ...
