Advantages: Lots of laughs
Disadvantages: none
I went to see The Proposal at the cinema last night, and I was not disappointed one bit. The viewing was absolutely packed, and I even spotted a few groups of blokes without girlfriends, so it certainly is a film for everyone - not just the girls. The film is a 12A certificate, and is directed by Anne Fletcher (27 dresses), starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. It was released at the cinema on 24 July 2009.
Synopsis:
Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is a high flying book editor, working for a large, respected publishing company in New York. However, Tate is disliked by her colleagues, and is known as the wicked witch. The role she plays reminds me of a less serious version of Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada. Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), is an eager assistant to Tate, desperate to make it to the top. Unfortunately for him he is in the wrong place at the wrong time when Tate is told by her bosses that she is being deported to her home country of Canada, as he VISA has run out. Tate then tells her bosses that she is in fact engaged to Paxton and that this now clears up the matter. This is obviously new information to Paxton, and the faces he pulls are worth going to see alone! Tate threatens to sack him if he doesn't agree to the marriage, and after agreeing he soon finds himself going down a slippery path towards the government officials determined to prove the marriage is a sham.
A trip to Alaska is next, to tell Paxton's family of the forthcoming wedding, where the delighted family suggest a wedding the very next day! What happens next is obvious to anyone, but its still enjoyable seeing how one minute they despise each other and the next.... I won't tell but I'm sure you can guess! I won't give away any more of the plot, but there are some fantastic scenes, especially where Ryan Reynolds ends up partially naked! Lots of laughs, and a few cringe worthy scenes thrown in for good measure. A perfect feel good film, worth watching just for the faces Ryan Reynolds pulls.
If you choose to see this film at the cinema, don't do what a lot of people did, and walk out at the beginning of the credits, there is a scene as the credits are coming up, where they are in front of the immigration officials answering questions about each other in a desperate bid to prove their love, and there's a few laughs to be had here. The whole cinema was laughing throughout the film, and I'm sure anyone who sees this film will enjoy it.
